De Guzman must be doing something right to get a contract with Deportivo La Corruna but there were rumbling the coach wasn't happy about it:-

Legend has it that Dwayne de Rosario was wanted by Kevin Keegan at Man City and this led to his departure of directors when the board turned it down. He probably belongs on your list.

You could probably look to our U-20 team to find the rising stars.

Ryan Gyaki just recently was offered a professional contract by Sheffield U. He's the player that scored all of Canada's goals at the U-20 qualifying tourny in January.

Jaime Peters has to be considered a rising star as well. Having a handful of full NT caps at the age of 17 (he is now 18 I believe).

Marcel DeJong is already playing professionaly in the Dutch 2nd tier with Helmond Sport.

Will Johnson, a prospect for the Chicago Fire looks like a decent young talent.

Julian Uccello is owned by AC Milan and just finished a pretty good season in one of Italy's lower tiers.

And for players a little older:

Danny Fernandes has a few starts for PAOK in Greece. Right now, Canada's keeper situation is a mess. If Fernandes can begin to play a little more consistently, I think he could have a real shot at taking over the number 1 spot.

Josh Simpson just came off his first full year in England's second tier. He's still young and has a lot of potential.

These are just off the top of my head.

Atiba???

And arent there 2 DeGuzman's???

Are they brothers?

Isnt the younger one in a debate over which country he wants to represent?
Is it Holland? Isn't he at Feyenoord?

Atiba???

Atiba Hutchinson. U20 WYC all-tournament choice after UAE. Plays for Helsingborg in Sweden, had a trial with Udinese right after WYC. Progressing nicely as a right back, I thought he was one of our best against Portugal.

There are two DeGuzmans and yes they're brothers. Julian just transfered to Depotiva de la Coruna. Jonathan is captain and golden boot winner (as a mid) for Feyenoord's youth team. He's 17 and is expected to be a squad player for the full team next year. Jonathan hasn't said much about his international prospects, but there's no doubt Mitchell wants him for the up-coming WYC and especially the 2007 when we host (we hope).

Until I've seen Jonathan DeGuzman play I can't really put him on this list, but I think Peters is the likeliest next big star. He was toying with the Mexican defence in U20 qualifying at times. I can't remember anyone ever doing that for Canada at any level. Curious to see if he's able to break into the starting lineup with Ipswich next year.

For the older guys (besides Atiba) I think Hume is ready for a breakout kind of year for either club or country.

No doubt in my mind that Jonathan de Guzman belongs on the list. He is one of the top ranked U19 players in Holland (at 17). Skies the limit for him.
Add Asmir Begovic, goalkeeper with Portsmouth playing up an age group or two.
I know enough about those players to think that they have huge potential.

Others that I have less information on would include David Edgar, a defender with Newcastle youth teams and the young kid in Italy Julian Uccello.

Hobbes, I think we've been waiting for that breakout year from Hume since he was 17. We're still waiting. And you can bet the house on Jonathan de Guzman being big; whether he suits up for Canada or not is another question.

I agree that based on what I've read Jonathan DeGuzman could be the best player we've ever produced. But I've never seen him play. That's the only reason for the hesitation. Everything I read about Terry Dunfield had me thinking he was can't miss, but watching him in Argentina he didn't convince that he was the finished article.

I have seen Uccello in person and I nearly mentioned him because I think he just has that knack for scoring that's hard to teach (similar to Gyaki in that sense). He had a nice year at a lower level while still being tied to a major club. But I think it'll be a few years before he gets a first team chance at a high level. Yet he's not starting ahead of the younger Will Johnson, so I don't know what to make of that.

I still have faith that Hume can score in the mid-teens in England next year.

It's all speculation and there's enough Brad Parkers, Kashka Walkers and Wyn Belottes around to know that nothing is certain.

He's about to turn 18 in the fall and has been in Rotterdam since he was 13 so he has a shot at Dutch papers. The name is not Dutch, try Filipino.
He is not only dominant in the Dutch top U19 league but his U17s and U19s teams are invited to a lot of international tourneys and he's been outstanding at many of those.

The last name is Spanish, I think his family is Guyanese though, like De Rosario, who has a Spanish last name but is of Guyanese heritage. But you're right, he's eligible for Dutch papers because he's been there for 5 years.

Yeah, we're all waiting on Hume and he seems to be vegetating in those lowe leagues. However, he was also an all-tourny star at the 2003 WYC and has shown he's a proven goalscorer.

Just needs to get out of the English third tier, already!

Did he play in Canada's WYC qualifying?

Is he gonna go to the WYC?

No and probably not.

The only news we've heard from anyone is from his bro.

Jacob Lensky at Glasgow Celtic seems to be highly rated in their youth system,Liverpool also seem to be keeping an eye on the young Canadian.

Yeah, usually youngsters at Celtic get a few chances in Preseason and the such. So hopefully you'll see a little of him if Celtic keep touring USA + Canada in the next few years.

There's a bit of Spanish influence in the Philippines. His family is definitely NOT Guyanese; you are misinformed on that point. His father is of Filipino heritage, mother Jamaican heritage.

I suspect he will commit to Canada eventually, as he and his brother remain very close, despite not having lived near each other for a number of years.
