Died 25 years ago today.

Terrible yes, but also maybe the best thing that ever happened to popular music, since his death helped push forward New Order.

One of the greatest bands of all time, IMO.

Did anyone else read the profile in Mojo (?) mag? It may still be on the newsstands. Fascinating read. After reading it and reading some on the Internet, I started a thread here about the fact that he held down a job in the UK civil service for almost the entirety of JD's existence. For some reason that interests me, because he was a workaday bloke who on the side was sneaking off to these clubs and spelling out his dark vision of society. He was a something of a d**k to his wife. And, interestingly for a rock star (and civil servant for that matter), he was a Tory voter. He was also a devout Manchester City fan. I think the rest of the band are United fans, no?

Anyway, the second side of Closer is part of the smallest handful of signature moments in rock-and-roll. Heart and Soul, 24 Hours, Decades and the Eternal are brilliant and uncompromising, if almost unlistenable if you know the end of the story. Love Will Tear Us Apart grows on you as you get older. It's hard to imagine someone writing it at age 24. It's hard to imagine someone writing any of it at age 24. Or any other age.

It's still strange to me to walk into a Virgin Megastore and see the stacks loaded with the albums that were very hard to find when I was younger. But it's a nice little boomlet.

Why is there an [R] on this? When I saw the thread title, I thought perhaps Ian had come back to life and killed himself again.

Loved Joy Division. One of my friends' punk bands back in the late 80s did a pretty blistering (for them) cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart live, and they'd throw in a bridge of DI's Richard Hung Himself, except of course say "Ian" instead. Pretty tasteless, yet got laughs.

I thought the exact same thing.

I wonder what it would have been like had Ian stayed alive. I can only imagine the kind of albums they could have put out.

I'm a huge New Order fan, but I'd be willing to give them up for a shot at knowing what Joy Division would have done.

It's a shame that Ian did himself in. Joy Division would've been a huge band if he had not killed himself.

Then again, what would the Doors be today if Morrison was still breathing?

They'd still be unlistenable.

Reuniting for the fifth time and touring state fairs.

I was never a big Doors fan and therefore must agree with Senor Hang

If anyone has a copy of "Here are the Young Men." I would very much like to know if they can burn it onto a DVD for me. I will gladly pay, as I can only find it on VHS.

Also, for those interested, rent 24 hour party people. A fictional account of Factory records, and thus quite a bit to do with Joy Division and then New Order, of course it also spills into the whole Happy Mondays thing as well.

Also, Ian was born in Macclesfield, I am not sure what that would do for one's allegiance to Manchester City as opposed to ManU but I believe in 24 hour party people there is some mention of football. In some form or other.

Oh one other thing. f interested in early early New Order rent or purchase "Taras Schevchenko" It is live footage of them playing at the Ukranian Home in NYC back in 1981, their first tour of the states I believe.

I always found it odd when the doors were mentioned as a big influence on joy division. maybe because joy division is on of my top 10 bands ever and i'd rather listen to color me badd than the doors.

go to www.half.com they have it very cheaply. As they do most things. I hardly ever visit record or book stores because I can find brand new stuff on that site for well.... almost half price.
PS> No I do not work for them, just a satisfied customer. :D

Thanks for mentioning the daughter. In the magazien article I mentioned, they have an interview with her. As she was a year old at the time of his death, she has no recollection of him. She obviously has at least something of a melancholy outlook, as she listed Heart and Soul and 24 Hours as among her favorite of his songs. She's the one who confirms he was a Man City fan, as that was what JD's manager, with whom sshe seems to have had a pretty decent relationship told her that (She's a Man City fan, as well.)

Another thing that's interesting .... how far medicine has come in just 25 years. Doctors gave him sedatives for his epilepsy ... that might as well have put leeches on him. Actually leeches would have been less damaging.

24 Hour Party People has a great soundtrack too.

She eerily looks exactly like him.

I know their manager (jesus, can't think of his name) was a big City fan, but I can't remember reading that anyone else in the band was claiming to be a huge supporter.

I recommend reading "From Joy Division to New Order".
