I just saw a commercial on espn that said espn deportivo is going to broadcast the game on espn2. Am I the only one with a problem with this? Ive seen many games in spanish and I know its not that big of a deal, but common, this is one of the biggest games of the year. Espn keeps letting down american soccer fans.

And I may have misheard the commercial, but the one I saw said that ESPN Deportes would be showing the Champions League final with all the pre and post-game stuff.
It also said that you could catch a sample of ESPN-D programming on espn2 at 10pm "tonight" (last night).
I don't recall it saying that the espn2 broadcast of the Champions League final would be in Spanish. Considering that ESPN is producing English language Champions League Final commentary for other markets, I would expect the final on espn2 to be in English.
But don't let that keep you from climbing up on your cross.

Calm down man. The champions league matches have all been shown in spanish on ESPN deportes, just like the final will be. They have shown more matches there than they have on ESPN2. The final will also be broadcast on ESPN2 in English, just like the other matches they have shown on ESPN2.

I hope your right. The reason I think it will be in spanish is because yesterday on espn2 they had an hour or so of espn deportivo on the actual channel espn2. And the commercial said the final would be on espn deportivo shown on espn2. Maybe I misherd it.

The commercial is a bit odd. It's an English language commercial telling you the game will be show on ESPN Deportes. This is true.
What it doesn't say is that the game will also be on in English on ESPN2. Why they can't mention both is beyond me.
I can see how the casual viewer might not realize the game is on ESPN2 as well.

They are just trying to hype their other channel. That's all. If they can trick people into ordering it by thinking they need it for the CL final then all the better for them. It probably just came down to the fact that ESPN doesn't understand the CL viewers in America and thinks that they are mostly spanish speakers. As for ESPN2 having an hour long spanish sportscenter, that is just another attempt to hype their other channel.
I've checked the listings a few times and the CL final will be on ESPN2 in English. In fact, I'm pretty sure that they are contractually obligated to UEFA to show the match live in English.

They've been showing an hour of ESPN Deportes every night (at 10pm ET, I think?) on ESPN2 to hype the new channel. They sometimes show ESPNEWS on the other channels to get you hooked on that.
As much as people b!tch about announcers here, you'd think that a game broadcast in another language wouldn't be a big deal. So you can't understand them. So what?
And as others have mentioned, the deal is that there's going to be extended coverage on ESPN Deportes. But there's going to be good ol' English coverage on ESPN2, just like usual. So relaje, amigo.

I saw the commercial again and looked at the listings for the broadcast. I guess i jumped the gun. :D

Casual viewer? That hurts. ;) Ive watched/played soccer my whole life. And I watch espn on the regular. Like i said in my post, the the thing that tricked me was the fact they had shown espn deportivo on espn2.
Oh well, glad i was wrong.

Well since I don't know anyone who actually gets ESPN Deportes, I'm betting that hour is all most of us will ever see of the channel. Anyone know what there subscriber nummers are? They've got to be tiny.

What's smaller?? ESPN Deportes or ESPN U?
Anyway, anyone remember Tommy and Mike saying they'd "be there" for the CL final?
It'll be in English.

An even larger number speak english.
There are three types of soccer fans in the U.S.
- Spanish speaking
- English speaking who are true blue Americans
- English speaking immigrants whose mother tongues are not Spanish
Don't assume that all English speaking fans are true-blue Americans. They aren't. They may be Chinese, Koreans, Africans, Russian, Germans, Iranians, etc. They all prefer English commentary over Spanish commentary because they don't speak Spanish, but English is not their mother tongue either...

I prefer watching CL games in Spanish than in English. Mike Hill is too damn calm. I had some fairweather soccerfan friends who saw the CL final on ESPN2 or ESPN Classic, tell me that the commentators were too calm and took the excitement away from such an exciting game. MLB, NHL, NFL and NBA commentators all have more enthusiasm than Mike Hill. Hopefully, we can get JP Dellacamara calling those games again.

Anyone else just get a mental image of Chris Berman attempting to jump through the camera into your living room? Or Dick Vitale?
Too much emotion can work against the announcers.

I like emotion. There's nothing wrong with that or wrong with Max "All you need is (Vagner)Love" Bretos. I love the way he calls the Argentine league games. But seriously Mike Hill needs some caffeine

Derek Rae partnered with Tommy Smyth, not Mike Hill, for the CL Final.
