You gotta go for the home team first...they're sitting in the middle of the table...perfect for a low budget team from the south.

Lothar Mattheus was a crap defender.
but still one of the best at his position...he never asked who we thought was the best defender. When a back ends tied for 3rd for most goals in a WC (1990) then he has to be recognized as one of the best especially with the great career he had on the NT and for Bayern.

Lothar Mattheus was not a back at the 1990 WC. He was Germany's creative force in midfield. And throughout the majority of his career he played in midfield. He only moved to the sweeper position when he didn't have the legs to play in the midfield anymore.

Matteus is best known for being an attacking mid in his prime.

Well they say the best defenders ever are Bobby Moore, Franco Baresi, Franz Beckenbauer
they were a bit before my time but in my time i'd say Maldini is one of the best i've ever seen.

Tuff question because I doubt to compare defenders and libero style sweepers.
I mean, you can´t compare a Terry and a Beckenbauer, because one is a real good ironfoot defender and the other is a genius playmaker and teamleader from the back.
In today´s tactics we have no sweepers anymore, so I will concentrate on the ironfeet and name some class german defenders like Kohler, Förster, Schnellinger, Vogts.

Beckenbauer was unmatched in his day, where as Maldini had to deal with the likes of Ronaldo, Batistuta, Vieri, Del Piero(in his prime) Baggio and a whole heap of out-and-out world-class forwards that would break out in the right flanks and cause trouble.
For the most part Maldini has held his ground; a superb stopper with grace and intellect. He's definitely my favourite of all time.

Gentile- Mr Cattenachio
Gentile was nothing but a hatchet man. His diabolical tactics overshadowed any real defensive skills he may have had. His horrific hacks on Maradona in the 82 World Cup should have carried prison time.
