So, Corinthians have signed highly prized Argentinian international Javier Mascherano for 15 million dollars. Why would a player leave River Plate for Corinthians, especially when Corinthians is near the relegation zone? where did a Brazilian side find 15 mill - and 15 for Tevez, and 7 for Carlos Alberto?
Well, investor group MSI has the answer: this groups is associated with Roman Abramovich, and they just use Corinthians to play the players Abramovich will want in a short run scenario: we want Mascherano, but Makelele's playing well and just renewed his contract? Let's wait for Claude to retire and give Mascherano a coupla of very well paid years in Brazil...
The promise of a Chelsea contract has to be there. Players like Mascherano and Tevez know they have a bright future in European clubs, so money can't really be the only reason they are there. These players have been transfer-rumoured around Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich..., so they wouldn't make such an apparently stupid career move just for money.
Now, I have no problem with Abramovich having his club and spending as much as he pleases on it. It is his club and his money. These practices, however, undermine fair competition, since Abramovich just takes everything off the market with shady legal techniques and sells it back (if he ever does) at outrageous prices. These economics are usually associated with Colombian drug cartels...
