In my opinion, the choice is painfully clear as to which is the superior program...but I wanted to know what you guys thought about this as well.

American Soccer...
...though in some ways, an unfair comparison. American Soccer isn't intended to only cover MLS, so they're going to have more coverage than MLS Wrap. Of course, you can say that FSC should have a more comprehensive show covering American soccer.

I think MLS Wrap lost something by having their host do a "call-in" type presentation. They go from having a studio, with more than just highlights, to having only highlights with the host not even being shown.

American soccer seems geared to 8-16 year olds. I really cannot sit through the whole show.
I don't like the new format of MLS Wrap. What happened to Harkes and the other guy? What are they up to now? Another gripe is that the hightlights show such bare minimum. They don't give a feel of flow for the game or buildup, which they could do if they would go back to a 1 hour show. By contrast, the Bundesliga wrap up show gives a much better feel of the games by showing what happened before the goal was scored or by showing other significant shots/buildups which may not have resulted in a goal.

I'm sorry to resurrect this thread, but you're joking...right?
PLEASE tell me you forgot to but a smiley face or something here.

He's confusing Fox Soccer USA on FSC (which is geared to teens) with American Soccer on GolTV.
American Soccer on GolTV is a far superior product than MLS Wrap - even if some of the opinions expressed on that show are stupider than some of those expressed by the stupidest newbies on BigSoccer.com

i end up just watching both. the computer generated set on american soccer is cheezy, and i think the fake widescreen in order to black out the other network's logos on the highlights is pretty lame too (not only because pieces of those logos creep down into the picture anyway, but also because you are cutting off some of the picture!)
i still like the discussion and debate format though, so I am willing to overlook all those things. I watch MLS Wrap on sunday morning to get my fill of highlights, but then every monday night sit down and get insights, not just highlights.

The EPL highlight show is incredible and its the same thing. No on-screen hosts, just highlights and running commentary. Watching the two different shows, you really start to appreciate what good editing and production can do for a program.

I think the 8 - 16 yr old comment was meant for Fox Soccer USA. :)

Heh. I just got FSC literally the week after the EPL season ended. Not a good time, I know, but I suppose it's better to wet one's feet before diving in.

They do a similar thing on SportsCenter. They'll take the widescreen feeds or CBS games (because they're HD), and use those. Not necessarily to cut the logos off halfway, but because the highlights will show up better on ESPN HD. You'll also see the full screen if you're watching on a 16x9 TV.

American Soccer was only 40 minutes this week. Is the a prelude to a cut?

Totally!
I think Phil Shane said the show last night was shorter because of the big Columbia game that followed.Got to hand it to Hudson for telling it like it is about the U-20 non-performers,Specter and Freddy. :(

They had a match they wanted to get to.

It certainly didn't give Ray Hudson the chance to end the show with his usual "Adios muchachos!". :(

i like ray hudson and everything but his verbal fellatio of brad davis last week on RSL's tv coverage of their game in san jose was a bit much.
Brad davis is ok, and he gets the occasional cross in. Hudson was saying he was as good as beckham, and that he is not...

"Hannibal getting the elephants over the Alps is a piece of cake compared to the job poor Alexi is going to have with the MetroStars."
"Jonathan Spector -- like the yellow-coated Manchester United player he is -- turns his back on the ball."
"Congratulations, Seamus Malin -- you ugly man. Oh, come on, you didn't think he got in on his looks, did you?"
