Which cover songs do you consider the best you have ever heard and maybe even better than the original song?
Here are some I like:
'Take me out' from Franz Ferdinand covered by the scissor sister.
'Hotel California' from the eagles covered by the gipsy kings.
'Sing it back' from moloko covered by Can 7.
'Rock the casbah' from the clash covered by Rachid Taha.
Also the cd's from 'La musique de Paris dernière' are great.

Gary Jules' cover of tears for fears 'Mad world'
Deep Purple's version of Hush (originally by Joe South, but Deep Purple only knew the Billy Joe Royal version)
The White Stripes cover of 'I just don't know what to do with myself' by Dusty Springfield. (I actually like the original as well, but that's probably a statement better made in the 'guilty pleasures' thread.)

REM's cover of The Clique's "Superman"
Nirvana's cover of Bowie's "Man who Sold the World"
Follow for Now's cover of PE's "Channel Zero"
Camper van Beethoven's cover of "Pictures of Matchstick Men".....I think Status Quo did the original?

What do you guys think of the covers Sr. Coconut makes? The ones from Kraftwerk are great, as is deep purple's 'smoke on the water', and Michael Jackson's 'beat it'.

Here's some which were so successful that many folks don't realize they weren't originals:
"Black Magic Woman"-- Fleetwood Mac covered by Santana
"All Along the Watchtower" Bob Dylan and already recorded by the Byrds before Jimi Hendrix
"Summertime Blues" -- Eddie Cochran and a hit for Blue Cheer before the definitive Who version
"Take Me to the River"-- Al Green et al before Talking Heads
"Reason to Believe"-- Tim Hardin before Rod Stewart
"Cold Cold Heart"-- Hank Williams Sr et al before Norah Jones
"Passionate Kisses"-- Lucinda Williams before Mary Chapin Carpenter
I suppose most folks realize that "Changes" was Fleetwood Mac before the Dixie Chicks...
And I prefer Rod Stewart's and the Neville Brother's takes on "Drift Away" to both the original Dobie Gray hit and the recent Uncle Kracker release...
Some personal favorites:
Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll and the Trinity's version of "Season of the Witch"
The Barrett Sister's "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong"
Small Faces' take on "Memphis;" also Sandy Bull's
The Subdudes' "Tired of Being Alone"
10000 Maniacs w/ David Byrne-- "Let The Mystery Be"
Richard Thompson's version of "Oops I Did It Again" (honest he did...)
X- "Breathless"
Who-- "Under My Thumb" and "The Last Time"
Beatles-- "Long Tall Sally" and "You Really Got A Hold On Me"
Little Feat-- "New Delhi Freight Train"
Grateful Dead-- "Big River"
Jerry Garcia Band-- "Stop That Train"
And of course the late great Elvis Presley's career kicked off with "That's All Right Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky."

Never heard that one, but do you know the version of Jagger together with Dave Matthews? Very nice.

Do you mean "Landslide"? I hate the Dixie Chicks cover of that song.

I actually like the Jules' cover a lot better than the TFF original. I thought the somber slowed down version Jules does to be more moving than the almost-techno TFF original.

Smashing Pumpkins did a pretty cool version of it though.

Yeah that was pretty good. I don't really like the original so it annoys me when other people cover it. Luckily SP did a good job.

My favorite cover: Girls Talk by Elvis Costello. I love his performance, but Linda Ronstadt and Dave Edmunds did it excellently as well.
Next: Because the Night. I dare you to pick the best version: Bruce who wrote it and I've only seen him do it live, Patty Smyth who I learned to love the song with, and 10,000 Maniacs adding the violins.
And Last: There She Goes. I'm blanking on who did it first (a little help?), but Sixpence None the Richer was a great cover.
So, the criteria is the cover has to be as great as the original.

Yeh-- I was actually writing two things at once and had a brain bubble... I liked it...

The La's. The La's had a serious war with the label over how the producer made them sound, and the whole project went down the tubes. Years later I heard a live recording: they were absolutely right and the label and producer were wrong...

I'd be willing to bet a vast majority of the people have no idea the who recorded this song. Eddie Cochran is the definitive version. easily.
also, i was starting to miss our bi-monthly 'covers' thread. nice to have it back! :)

stone temple pilots covering zeppelin's dancing days. took one of the 3 zeppelin tracks that I really don't totally love and made it into something special.

Oh come on--millions of people bought "Live At Leeds"... I do love the original, but even among rock'n'roll fans he's not so well known... "Something Else" is his best effort by me...

i'm just saying the average fan is probably more familiar with Eddie Cochran's version than the who. even if they can't remember his name ... his is THE version.
trust me on this one ... i have my fingers on the pulse of America. :D :D
and I'm a big Who fan, so not knocking theirs ... but I've NEVER heard it on the radio. Eddie Cochran's is there all the time. maybe I'm wrong, or maybe where I grew up there was a Who Sumertime Blues blackout or something .... :)
