Props to UVanMathias for digging this up:

I think this pretty much signals the end of the Toronto MLS expansion bid...unless MLSE decides to pay for the stadium themselves which they aren't doing.

That's really too bad :(

Yep. In the end, if MLSE had had enough faith in the deal, they in all likelihood could have come in for less than the Argos had been proposing and saved it.

Slam Dunk? Do you think that Don Garber is really George Tenant? Either way he'll definitely get a medal of freedom.

It's a shame because I really would've liked to see MLS in Toronto, but at the same time from what I've seen posted over at the Canadian supporter forums most Canucks DESPISE MLSE. We could've had a Canadian version of Metrostars in all possibility.

On the plus side this boads wells for the future prospects of Rochester NY getting a MLS team (come on, I am trying to be the "glass-half-full guy").

Yes, that's it now well and truly stone cold dead so Toronto now joins Trenton, Milwaukee, Cleveland etc in the list of MLS projects which ultimately turned out to be based on wishful thinking. Oh well life goes on. To be fair to Don Garber what he said was it was a slam dunk if the stadium is built.

The CSA should consider themselves EXTREMELY LUCKY that FIFA didn't just say "screw this" and move the WYC to South Korea instead in '07. South Korea already has the facilities and infastructure necessary to hold such a tournament and as a result has less beaurcratic red tape.

Commiserations to all the soccer fans of Toronto and the metro area. It nearly defies logic that a city of that size and of such international flavor does not have a premier-level pro soccer team nor has had one since... well...

To borrow... Where there is no vision, pro soccer perishes.

Perhaps we should send up CARE packages of heavy wool socks to UT, York, and the Argos' office for all those cold feet.

MLS Toronto is now more dead than the Monty Python parrot.

That was my first thought.

Then again, what's the average attendances at WYCs?

... I've been trying to answer my own question, but the FIFA website's being to slow for me.

And that takes care of expansion in '06. And maybe even '07. Looks like Garber knew what he was saying.

Would be dead for '06. More of a bet will see two teams in '07.

Maybe this opens the door for Rochester/a 2nd NYC team which would absolutely destroy anything the Metros have if it happens.

If the Metros get Harrison, they'll be fine. 85% of their fan base is based in New Jersey anyway, not NYC.

Sweet we can now end the silly debate that Canada should be part of MLS and start focusing on American cities that need teams.

I'm happy about this because I'm against Canadian teams in MLS. That doesn't mean that I'm against soccer in Canada. Here's hoping that they get it together up there and get a nice little league together. But it's on them. Not us.

I doubt it.

It's only a matter of time before we start hearing murmurings about MLS expansion to Montreal now that they have an SSS in the works.

I doubt it.

It's only a matter of time before we start hearing murmurings about MLS expansion to Montreal now that they have an SSS in the works. Their owner's not really interested in MLS. But someday, I imagine a Canadian city will be interested, and we'll get to hear all those "they're takin' 'er jobs!" posts again, and all those who confuse Canada's economy with that of a third world country.
