...a chance to remember last year's Eastern Conference Final. (http://dcunited.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20050511&content_id=29379&vkey=news_dcu&fext=.jsp&team=dcu)
Was it the greatest MLS game ever? To be honest, I'm not sure. But everything about that game -- the level of play, the way New England kept fighting back, the penalty shootout, the sight of 21,201 black-clad fans on their feet all game -- brought to reality everything we had hoped to see at an American soccer game.
No, I didn't write it to coincide with this weekend's game at all. Why do you ask? :D

Nice writeup Dave. Standing at the rail in 135 next to Charlotte and Big Rob, Gomez's score was probably the most beautiful goal I've ever seen live. I almost went over the rail backwards in all the mayhem. Damn, what a night...

What I remember most was about 10 minutes before the game, as the Revs were warming up in front of us, someone in La Norte started singing softly. All of a sudden, someone else heard him and joined in. All of a sudden, all of La Norte was singing @ 10 minutes before game time. Hardly anyone was in the stadium, but all the Revs were looking at us slackjawed.
I also remember during the second half that La Norte was jammin' hard. We sang one song "Dale United" for at least 15 minutes without a break. No one wanted that evening to end.

Ah yes...the "Ten Minutes Love". It's a shame we haven't done that yet this season.

Your weekly rep from me is posted. Great write up to a great game. I'm saving all these so I can sit down with my son or daughter and explain the history of D.C. United. This is great.

One of the most memorable moments of that match for me was Nellie and Dema walking right past my seat at the start of OT so they could watch from the field (or at least field level seats). They both appeared to be in a state of rage, Dema had his crazy look going.

good piece there dave, thanks. i have to say i was so tense in that game i didn't find it fun at all. its more fun reading the story. i've never been so nervous at a united match.

I called my wife immediately afterward, screamed "They won! Rimando!" and held the phone so she could hear the crowd.
I was a tense, nervous and emotional wreck like everyone else throughout the game but what a great feeling. Still get chills watching this.
Like R&B,I really only enjoyed this game when I watched afterword on tape. Like game seven of the Yanks-Red Sox series last year, I was so tense watching it live that I nearly tossed my cookies (and then couldn't believe what happened when we won).

Well done Dave.
I agree with R&B...the taste of five years of chewed walnut shells made it incredibly tought to "enjoy" that game. The Gomez goal, and about 2 minutes thereafter were the only relaxed, fun times I had except for the end celebration.
I had a hell of a lot more "enjoyment" of the full contest watching the replay.
Cheers,

Great article, great timing!
Our family really enjoyed that game. Sure there was a WIDE range of emotions during the game (mad, happy, crying, anxiety, nervousness, laughing and joy), but just being in the nest with my two daughters and wife, jumping and singing "We are part of Nowak's Army" for most of the game and seeing everyone else in the stadium doing the same, made me proud to be a DC United fan.
Maybe WE can ALL do it again later this!

I don't think anybody with a rooting interest in that game enjoyed it. I knew it was something special right before Gomez scored (I think it was after a particularly great Petke clearance), but enjoy it? Nah. The Columbus destructions in 98 and 99 were a lot more fun.

So does anyone else want to invite me to dinner and have me tell stories about United?

Sure they were, but some people live for the dramatic games!
