View Full Version : Origin of Ferguson vs. Arsenal?

I'm a new-ish Gunner fan in NYC -- I got Fox Soccer Channel a year ago and latched on to the brilliant offensive play of Henry et. al. I was reading a SoccerNet article today and found the following quote:
"With the notable exception of his dealings with Arsenal, [Alex Ferguson] can generally be relied upon to react to any situation in a sportsmanlike manner."
What's the origin of the Ferguson vs. Arsenal hatred? They're rivals, of course, but this article makes it sound like there's something deeper and more personal -- is there?

The following link will answer some of your questions. It summarizes a history of mind games between Wenger and Red Nose. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/4180781.stm

The origin of it is that Red Nose is a stupid twat. Simple as that.

yes of course, because we all know that the mighty TDB was a football fan before he was even a sparkle in his daddy's eyes.

You know, Teso, most people start out as plastic fans, we really have no other choice. How is someone going to pick a Blackburn or Southampton or a Fulham? There's very little press, even on the net, they're rarely on TV. It's natural that people gravitate towards winners. What separates plastic fans from true supporters is how they respond to the inevitable downswings. How do you handle the 10 or 15 year drought?
Let's not resort to name calling when someone admits (s)he's a newbie and is just seeking to gain a little background.

Good point Val! A plastic fan would just blindly support a team because they won something. A person striving to be a real fan dives into the history of the club, wants to know all there is to know, and is willing to admit it. I say kudos to the newbie.

You're right. I apologize for being a new Arsenal fan.
In fact, I apologize for being a new SOCCER fan. I think I'll go back to watching baseball and basketball like all the other drones in this country. From now on, I resolve to be a new man: I will never again broaden my horizons or try anything new.
Thanks TDB - your post has changed my life!

Sure, why would anybody watch THenry and be impressed? Why would anyone take notice of the flowing football Arsenal can play when they've got it going? Why would anyone get excited enough to try and understand the rivalry, especially just before the FA Cup showdown?
Better to be a fan of my NUFC who fight with each other and can't string more than two passes together without putting the ball back to Shay Given. Then you just have to contend with our empty bandwagon.
Hang in there WR Is Fat. These Arsenal fans are the best on the boards and when you meet many of them in person, they are truly great, the Chicago Globe Pub crew in particular.
You'll have many an interesting match to watch in the upcoming years ... and pick up Hornby's "Fever Pitch" so you can see what you're letting yourself into.
Good luck to you.

Teso's just got his panties bunched up because Livingston are 9th in the table and ManU are now 20 points adrift of the top. ;)

Perhaps someone should start a poll on this question . . .
What are our possible choices so far:
-stupid twat
-inferiority complex
-Fergie's incredible need to overcompensate for something is threatened by Arsenal
-clinically provable mental defect
-children resemble ___________________ (fill in favorite arsenal player/coach from appropriate time period)
Others?

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the man Ferguson called a "novice" capped off a brilliant double season with a dramatic title win at Old Trafford. Somehow I think Red Nose never quite got over it. :)

That's funny, TDB must believe you have to be born in the playoff circle of Highburry if you want to be a supporter.

You gotta ignore that guy. He's just another ManUre fan, who for some unknown reason, lists Livingstone as his team. Personally, I think if you like in the US you got a good excuse for following Arsenal or ManU, if you like in Scotland on the other hand . . .
