Ok, so I was bored and watching some of the video highlights off of MLSNet.
The may 7th game, columbus vs DC there is a good example of the AR-CR signals, at 1:50 into the highlights.
A columbus guy beats a DC guy down the line and is brought down from behind right along the touch line. If you watch closely you can see the AR signal the fou with the flag, when the CR blows the whistle, the AR signals for the caution with the tap on the badge symbol. The CR immediatly then goes to his breast pocket for the card.
I know, not to exciting, but I found it interesting to see it happen.

Totally undeserved card. Maybe a foul, if you call incidental contact 3 steps beforehand a foul ...... next time maybe the center ref should think about using his card better, not just because an AR was fooled by a dive.

I use that signal quite often. It is nice to get confirmation from your AR for a card.

Not how I wanted this thread to go, but.....
I think it was a good call, the fouled player had cleaning beat him and the replay clearly shows the defender stepping into the legs of the guy. Now did the guy play it up a bit? You bet he did, but it was a clear foul after getting beat down the side line, ie "professional foul"

At that level, there's no such thing as "incidental contact" when it comes to killing an attack. Those players are slick and you can be sure that they know what they're doing even if it looks like an accident.

In my fellow fan's defense, I know that fb was much closer to the play than the AR, but I also recognise that the AR had a better angle (90° from the stands, able to see the direction of the defender's stride). It was a professional foul, undoubtedly. However, if the same attacking player ("Loco") hadn't hit the ground four or five times in the first ten minutes whenever he lost close control of the ball, I doubt the fans would have gotten on him (or the awarding of the card) so hot and heavy.
Very good communication by the Ref team. It was a well-run match. And after about 20 minutes, the CR picked up on the ease with which "Loco" kept losing his footing, and the player stopped falling down.

On other notes, I just saw one of our national refs do a hatchet job at the Real Salt Lake/Seattle Sounders match last night, precisely out of lack of communication with the ARs. He missed *three* flags in the first half, then proceeded to miss three more in the second half. He also gave two very soft yellow cards that had the effect of slowing down the game for the team that was desperate to get going quickly and score. Ugh. Not a good game. I found myself biting my tongue and reciting to myself "I will not knowingly promote criticism of my fellow referees...I will not knowingly promote criticism of my fellow referees..."

I've had that a number of times in my games, but if I'm near the AR I'll usually go over to consult with him anyway.
