I really like punk rock, but I only know a few punk bands, but of those bands I know basically everything about them and own every song they ever made.
Those bands are:
Dead Kennedys
The Ramones
The Clash
Stiff Little Fingers
Dropkick Murphys
The Pogues (not punk in the traditional sense I guess but their whole attitude is, and that translates into their music)
The problem is I like the bands that lean more towards the hardcore aspect, such as Dropkick Murphys, but I also like ones that write about meaningful crap and that have melodies like the Clash. I heard the sex pistols and don't like them at all, are there any other punk or hardcore bands that are like these guys???

Buy this. (http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=73926)
And even if you don't buy it, just reading the track listing should point you in a quite few good directions.

Wow, the above collection pretty much takes the cake as far as the key singles.
Essential "punk" to me:
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers "LAMF" (Absolutely a must)
The Damned's "Machine Gun Ettiquette"
All three of the MC5's proper albums
Iggy and the Stooges "Raw Power"
The Adolescents "S/T Blue Album" (and everything else)
The Germs Rhino release (don't recall the name)
Agent Orange "Living in Darkness"
Dictators "Dictators Forever, Forever Dictators" (This is more recent, but any Dics album will do...even Manitoba's Wild Kingdom)
Dead Boys "Younger, Louder, and Snottier"
Misftis "Static Age"
Rubber City Rebels...anything
The Pagans...both of their two Smog Veil releases are badass

A lot of great bands went the Clash route--that is, they moved away from punk. Any punk band that continued to make punk after 4 or 5 records probably sucks anyway.
The Replacements (only the early stuff--Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FSQ6/ref=m_art_li_6/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music) Stink, (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FSQ7/ref=m_art_li_9/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music) Hootenany, (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FR74/ref=m_art_li_7/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music) and, arguably, Let It Be (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FR75/ref=m_art_li_1/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music)--is punk, though.)
Minor Threat (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000JO3/qid=1115749175/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-2733075-4136650)
Black Flag (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000LZ2/ref=pd_bxgy_text_1/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music&st=*)
The Wipers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005QK5X/qid=1115749221/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-2733075-4136650?v=glance&s=music)
Wire (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003BGK/qid=1115749235/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-2733075-4136650)
Bikini Kill (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000064AF/qid=1115749248/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/103-2733075-4136650) were kind of overrated, but the three-song ep they recorded with Joan Jett (seriously) some of the best punk since the first wave.
Rocket from the Crypt (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002198W8/qid=1115749278/sr=2-6/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_6/103-2733075-4136650)
As far as not-quite punk goes, The Fall, The Fastbacks, Television, New York Dolls, MC5, and The Modern Lovers (their first album only--the other stuff is like children's music),

Yikes, how could I have forgotten Husker Du's Zen Arcade, the best hardcore album ever recorded.

I knew someone was going to post 'that's not REAL punk rock!!!!!!!!!!'
Here's some bands I like. I like every band you listed a lot, except Stiff Little Fingers. I've never heard them. I'll list some of my favorite songs next to their name, in case you're the 'try before you buy' type:
Social Distortion: Story of my Life, Ball and Chain, Down Here with the Rest of Us, Don't Drag Me Down, When the Angels Sing, Sick Boy, Crown of Thorns, lots of others. They're my personal favorite. Johnny Cash inspired punk rock.
Operation Ivy: Bombshell, I Got No, the Crowd, Bad Town are my favorites but everything they've done is great. This is essential. Awesome, awesome album. It's too bad they didn't put out more stuff before they broke up.
Misfits (old stuff): Last Caress, Where Eagles Dare, Attitude
The Queers: ******** the World, Like a Parasite, Kicked out of the Webelos, Little Honda, Granola Head
Screeching Weasel: I Wanna be a Homosexual, My Right, Pervert at Large, the Girl Next Door. They kind of kicked off this whole emo thing that's big right now, but that's only because those bands took their sound and totally pussified it. SW is still punk rock and always will be. They don't whine like these new emo bands and some of their stuff is not emo at all (My Generation, American Psychiatrist).
Flogging Molly: A Song for the Irish Girl, Rebels of the Sacred Heart, Tobacco Island, Screaming at the Wailing Wall. These guys are heavily celtic based punk rock. They're like Dropkick, in that sense, but they've got their own sound.
Common Rider: Classics of Love, Radio. This is the band Jesse from Operation Ivy formed. He became a Buddhist monk in, I think, Tibet, then came back because he wanted to play more music. Kind of soft music but you might like them.
Nofx: I don't care what people say, the Decline ********ing rocks.
The Exploited: Sex and Violence
Rancid: People say they're not 'punk rock elite' or whatever, but I really don't care. True, their new album sucks donkey balls except for three songs, but some of their old stuff is golden. Check out Radio, Time Bomb, Old Friend, Black Lung, Side Kick, Roots Radicals, Olympia, Wa., Poison, It's Quite Alright I Wanna Riot. There's two version of I Wanna Riot. The one with Stubborn All Stars is pretty damn cool imo.

Mostly DC bands, but the DC hardcore scene was one of the hottest in the country at the time.

nobody can dispute this but RANCID is the greatest punk band of alltime next to sex pistols who are a close second.

No Minutemen?
And as great as Black Flag was with Henry Rollins--Damaged IS one of THE great punk albums--you gotta get their debut EP "Nervous Breakdown." with Keith Morris (later of the Circle Jerks) on vocals. The title tracks is the template that all louder-faster-harder American hardcore is based on.
Funhouse (The Stooges) is closer to true punk than Raw Power.

She also produced The Germs debut LP.

What about the arty New York punk scene?
Richard Hell and the Voidoids. (Great cover, if nothing else).
Patti Smith--Horses.
Television--Marquee Moon (not my cup of tea, but almost all my friends LOVED it, so I feel obligated to throw it in).

For my money, this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005UD03/qid=1115782543/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-5894598-6031935?v=glance&s=music&n=507846) is the most energetic, frenzied album of the decade so far. I have no idea if people who are really into punk would call it punk, but I'll be damned if it doesn't get your heart racing.
