Chimbonda Explains Racism Hell (http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=275571&CPID=24&CLID=&lid=11&title=Chimbonda+explains+racism+hell&channel=France)

Chimbonda explains racism hell
by Patrick Haond - created on 9 May 2005

Bastia's Pascal Chimbonda has talked of his racist hell at the club - admitting he will look to leave the Corsican outfit in the summer.

Chimbonda has suffered through death threats and racist abuse and talked of the difficulty of life at the club.

"I went to take a throw in and a guy shouted 'dirty black, will you put in some hard work', I asked him what the problem was and he started to try to get on the pitch," explained Chimbonda in L'Equipe.

"He spat at me then others followed suit. They even threw a seat from the stands.

"I wanted to leave there and then, but Christan Karembeu and Stephane Ziani convinced me to stay and do my job.

"But that is not football. People have to understand that I was spat upon. We are human beings aren't we?

"Since the match against St Etienne (November 13) there has been monkey noises and there has been worse.

"I have had threatening letters suggesting that accidents can easily happen.

"My life is in disarray. My girlfriend has moved back to Paris because she could not stand it any more.

"How can I consider anything but leaving in the future? I am eager for the season to be over.

"I know it is a minority of people and I have met some fantastic people in Corsica but that minority is ruining my life.

"If I had walked off the pitch in protest on Saturday Youssouf Hadji and Anter Yahia told me they would have followed me.

"People once again spat on me, as if I was s***."

Perhaps if the Fans treated their own player correctly Bastia might be able to bring in some new players and acctually have a chance at competing. If the fans are going to force their own players out, then I can't see anything but Bastia in the National at the end of next season.

Well, I've met some Corsican fans, and they seemed a reasonable bunch.

The problem is really sticky, because you have to understand the Coriscan push for independence and their anti 'pied-noir' status amongst alot of its residents.

I know for a fact that many Corsican nationalists attend Bastia home matches....

A shame that they would rather hurl abuse at a black guy than push for some peaceful and democratic way fo getting full autonomny.

I doubt many have lost the will, and know they are losing the fight and have resorted to sheer racism to satisfy their stupid little minds.

Well I hope that their fans enjoy Ligue 2 next year.

Pier Noir? That referrs to colonist's in North Africa specifically. I imagine that Corsican's can afford black shoes.
As for the article..... Corsica Nazione!
No seriously though, wierd place. I've only been once, it's beautiful as hell, but there is a weird feel to the place. Not the type of place you want to be fixing a flat tire if you know what I mean.
It's kind of funny that the "other" Corsican team will be the one in L1 next year. Instead of Monaco joining Serie A, I think that France needs to "dump" their Corsican clubs on the Italian League. It would make for some great Corsican vs. Sardinian matches, and they both have similar attendances.

At least they don't discriminate in being racists... wether you're with them or against them ;)

Racism in Corsica has been a major issue for years.
For the french-speaking readers, an official report :

Quote :

[...] une hausse préoccupante des actes racistes et xénophobes en Corse (107 actes et menaces contre 15 en 2003).

from 15 to 107, between 2003 and 2004, that's a 700 % raise  .

(and, if you don't know it, death threats in Corsica are no jokes, they're for real).

When I lived in Nice 20,000 francs got you a Corsican hitman. Clean and without questions. I imagine things have gone up... inflation, conversion to the Euro, etc...

Oh well, don't know if it would be a good idea given what you report... :D

Not that there are issues against our cousin Corsica, basically there is no issue at all.
Maybe some link and contact there is with the northernmost part of Sardinia (Gallura) who speaks a dialect very similar to corsican (and much different than the sardinian language).
Corsican and gallurese are italian dialects, while sardinian is not, it's a romance language on its own (the most conservative one, ie the nearest to old latin).

The only similar thing is the flag. We have "the 4 moors", they have 1 moor.

Corsica

Sardinia

Also, the independist movements in Sardinia reaches at best 3-4 % in the elections and there's no history of armed fighting (at least in the last 2 centuries).
It's true though that all the parties (tied with national italian ones) are more or less autonomist.
We're an autonomous region, not enough maybe, but still...

Basically we sardinians recognize we are a nation, but still then, after this recognition of identity, we are also italians and part of Italy.

I see though that corsican cultural identity is far more in danger than sardinian one. That would explain much of corsican problems.

As for attendances... Sardinia (1,65 million) Corsica (260k).

Almost 7 times the population. Sardinia being 4 times bigger in km2.

p.s. Some friends of mine experienced that "weird feel to the place" you mentioned. They told me about an inexplicable hostility... and they're guys coming from interior sardinia.
In interior Sardinia you're a welcomed guest till you don't make foolish things who make the ppl think the contrary. Then, but only then, it could really turn ugly.
But again historical and cultural facts can explain it (and also bad luck, since you can encounter the moron or the morons everywhere in the world)

The place is surely beautiful, sea and high mountains capped with snow in few km2.

Read the comic, if you can. Pétillon is cartoonist for the "canard enchaîné" (famous humorous newspaper. Brings the truth and shameless puns since 1916).

Pétillon's political humor is very elegant and clever, almost british-like. The movie, in comparison, is a true disgrace.

Of course, if you're American, you need to know a little bit of the political situation in Corsica to understand the book. Anyway, don't let the movie fool you, the book is great.

Hmmm. yeah, but I was refering to them as a group signalled out by the Corsicans. That racism is somewhat inherent to their mentality. The principle is still the same. Doesn't matter if you are North African or Black.

Serious, Mob rule still exists over there. :(

If the Corsican teams were admitted to the Italian league they would be Serie C at best.

No, I'm French and familiar with the "Corse
thing" (wait..I'm also american...since 6 months
ago...guess that makes me dual-citizen :D )
so I understood the movie alright...just that
it does suck...
Petillon, I'm not too familiar with. I like comic
books, of course, but his aren't really my style.
But I'll try to check this one out.
And now, we're completely off-topic :p

Who says that bigsoccer can't be a historical forum. Excellent. Didn't mean to offend with too many Sardinia/Corsican parralels.

This also means that the phenomenon is quite recent, apparently a new way of spreading the sh..t by a fringe of nationalists. Unfortunately, the trend is gaining momentum even outside the separatist movement and instillate in the younger population. once again, as usual to spit out one's frustration. Gives the impression to those losers (I mean the racists, don't read me wrong) that they still hold some kind of primal pride...

Anyway, if I go there, I'll make sure of showing as many Breton Gwen Ha Du flags as I possibly can !!! :D

And there was no real offence in what you said. ;)

I just tend to like writing some about sardinia when I have the opportunity.

It's not like I know how big are french regions... and to know the exact population of corsica i googled the net.

Well the "other" Corsican team might not be in Ligue 1 either. Remember they are gonna vote on their stadium situation in June and if things turn out a certain way they will be relegated to the National. I dont wanna dump the Corsican teams on the Italian league. It would never happen anyway because Corsica is part of France not part of Italy. Let them play in Ligue 2 and the National and things will be fine. I also hate to mis inform you but the Sardianian team in Serie A is averaging more per game than the 2 Ligue 1 Corsican teams combined so you can not say both have similar attendences.

I was speaking in jest but.......
Well if comparing Ajaccio and Bastia's attendance to Italian teams, lets use Juve. Surely Ajaccio has better attendance than Juve? :)

I think June 15th is the date where the FFF are voting on Ajaccio. I dont know if they have to have the upgrades done by the start of next season to stay in Ligue 1 or do they have until the end of next season to get it done.
