Referees and ARs for the World Youth Cup announced:

http://www.fifa.com/en/comp/WYC/tournament/0,4114,WYC-2005-22,00.html

This is one of four FIFA tournaments where potential WC06 referees will be vetted (U17, Confed and WCC being the others), so it will be interesting to keep an eye on assignments and performances. Kevin Stott, who's attended this tournament before, is not on the list; I'd expect to see him at the Confed Cup or Club Championships. Since he's already been to the WYC, I think the U17 tournament might be seen as a step down.

Since I haven't had time to research this, the question begs to be asked: How many of these CR's were in the group that went to Germany earlier this year for training?

Why no US refs?

Not an identical list, but a significant number of the 46 with lower profiles (ie: not Merk, etc...) are in this group.

Why no US refs?Because all 46 (45 now, I believe, with the loss of Frisk...unless Braahmaar quietly replaced him, of course) have to get at least one shot at one of the 4 FIFA tournaments this year. Stott's will come at one of the other 3 tournaments.

I'd be shocked if the candidates weren't tested at one of these tournaments - the only exceptions I could see would be the refs tested through Champions League matches.

I posted this earlier, here: http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193809

Where do you get the information that Braahmar, De Santis, Poulat and Vassaras are only working as fourth officials? That would seem odd considering three of them (and possibly Braahmar, as Frisk's replacement) are in consideration for World Cup duty (though it is true that none of their countrymen are there as ARs).

So all but Eric Brahmaar are on the list of 45. Seems strange that they've got 3 candidates there as FO only though. Does this suggest some of the unlucky ones will go as FOs only?

And it also seems to suggest those referees from countries big on football will have teams of three. So there is hope for your man from Canada.

Also, from a UEFA POV, good to see Busacca out and about - supposed to be a very good young ref. Bags of experience in there too with Codji, Ruiz, Hauge, Shield and Sars.

I suspect you'll know more, and have things to say about your CONCACAF reps.

I got it from someone else who gets appointments for all sort of games, generally involving UEFA's FIFA refs sent to him. And as you said, the fact none of them have fellow ARs with them tends to validate his claim. Plus, Holland being the host country, that is why Braahmar is there.

I imagine all three of them will still go to one of the other FIFA tournaments this year as CRs.

Also, any word on whether or not Frisk is being replaced? If so, is it Braahmar? It's true that it makes sense that he's on the list with Holland being the host country, but it still seems kind of odd that every other guy at the tournament--including the other fourths--is a WC candidate. FIFA could have just as easily sent a guy from nearby like Hamer or Fandel.

No word yet, but I'd say it's highly unlikely Braahmar is anywhere near in contention for a WC place. If you look at the current UEFA candidates, they are all regularly out in the UC and UCL, and doing Int'ls. However, Braahmar has only had 3 UC appts this season, and those were all in the early stages. Plus there are far more experienced referees who would be ahead of him in the pecking order for that place, not least from his own country in Jan Wegereef. So I'd say it's just a case of him being there as a FIFA ref from the host country.

As for the other FOs, I agree, I didn't mean it had any bearing on their places at the WC, merely suggesting that the fact this tournament has 'seperate' FOs might suggest we'll have the same at the WC, and those at the WC will come from the unlucky guys who aren't in the final 30. :)

Eric Poulat has replaced Alain Sars for the tournament, and Sar's ARs have also been replaced by Poulat's; Nelly Viennot and Lionel Dagorne. Poulat isn't even staying as a FO, so I'm assuming he has an injury.

Good to see a female official at the tournament.

Good to see a female official at the tournament.
And by virtue of the following press release, which says that every official at the WYC (save Braahmaar) is a candidate for WC06, the possibility exists that we'll see the first ever female official at the World Cup:

http://www.fifa.com/en/comp/index/0,2442,107180,00.html?comp=WYC&year=2005&articleid=107180

Of course, her fortunes appear to rest largely on the shoulders of Poulat, as the release refers to 'trios'. As Poulat isn't exactly the highest regarded UEFA candidate, the road may prove tough for her.

That is of course a big problem, as having seen both Sars and Poulat, neither are worthy of being in the top 30 IMO, but Poulat less so than Sars.

Interesting articleon fifa.com about the WYC referees.

http://www.fifa.com/en/media/index/0,1369,107256,00.html?articleid=107256

13 of the 48 officials were sent home for failing the fitness test!! I wonder what the standard was.....

Here's the most relevant part:

The following trios will therefore not officiate at the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005:
- Referee: Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh (Malaysia) + Assistant Referees: Mohamad Rodzali Yacob (Malaysia)/Mohamed Saeed (Maldives)
- Referee: Modou Sowe (Gambia) + Assistant Referees: Dramane Dante (Mali)/Mamadou Ndoye (Senegal)
- Referee: Marco Antonio Rodriguez Moreno (Mexico) + Assistant Referees: Hector Delgadillo (Mexico)/Leonel Leal (Costa Rica)
- Referee: Eric Poulat (France) + Assistant Referees: Nelly Viennot (France)/Lionel Dagorne(France)

Referee Kyros Vassaras, who was due to serve as a fourth official in the Netherlands, will not take part in the competition due to injury.

Replacements for the above match officials, selected from the same confederations, will be confirmed in due course.

Looks like we might see a US ref at the WYC after all.....

Also of interest:

- Having fallen short of requirements in Frankfurt in February, this is the second time that referee Modou Sowe (Gambia) has failed the test and he is therefore dropped from the list of candidates to officiate in next year's tournament.
- The other trios remain on the shortlist for the time being, however, the assistant referees who failed yesterday's fitness test will have to be replaced. These trios will be given a second and final chance at the FIFA U-17 World Championship Peru 2005.

It must be made clear though, that 13 referees never failed their fitness test, 1 was injured, and at least one from each of the four trios failed their test, causing the whole trio to be sent home.

It doesn't say Modou Sowe will be replaced, so I'm assuming the list is now just 44.

It said that there were five officials for whom "the test proved too stringent". With four trios bounced, it would appear that one crew had two failures.

Somewhat restrained in their appointments with the removal of 4 referees, but no real surprises with the 'big' appointments going to the experienced refs; Oscar Ruiz, Terje Hauge, Mark Shield and Massimo De Santis (although I don't rate MdS).

The US should have no problems with Terje, one of Europe's top referees.
