I do not know all of the rules of soccer but from watching the game for more than 7 months ( mostly English Premiership on Fox Soccer Channel ) I got the understanding that Red Cards were given for extremely harsh and dangerous challenges, for fighting or any intentional blows to the head or extreme unsportmanship ( when neville was red carded for tossing a ball at someone in the crowd ); but in the recent Manchester United v Charlton game I found out that apparently if a player is goal bound and is fouled by the last defender than it is a red card ( which was given when Wes Brown was fouled ). I hadn't seen this before; what other incidents qualify for a Red Card? Does a goalkeeper get a red card for 'any' foul he commits in the penalty area? I remember Petr Cech being red carded earlier in the season when he fouled someone in the penalty area and in the 2nd Leg of the UEFA Champions League Semi-Final, he fouled Baros but wasn't red carded. If the goal had not been given, would there have been a penalty kick and would Cech have been red carded?

I'm just a little unclear on all the rules that apply for giving a red card.

Sorry for the long run-on sentences.

Ryan

I'm moving this to the referee forum, where you'll get much better answers.

You get a red card for Denying an Obvious Goal Scoring Oppertunity.

So if the keeper intentionally fouls the plyer to keep him form scoring its a red card.

If a player hand balls a ball to keep it form going in the net, its a red card.

If the last defender trips or fouls the player to keep him from going 1 on 1 with the keeper its usually a red car.

If the keeper however fouled a player, but he was offsides there was no scoring oppertunity so he would not recieve a red card.

If the goal goes in there is no red card because he didnt not deny the goal.

The seven red card offences:

Serious foul play (extremely bad tackles)
Violent conduct (fighting)
Spitting at an opponent or any other person
Denying the opposition a goal or obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberate handball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
Use of offensive, insulting, or abusive language or gestures
Recieving two cautions in the same match
