The Franchise thread got me thinking about this topic, and rather than hijack that thread, I thought I'd start a new one.

I've always dreamt of starting my own freelance/consulting business in my line of work. I know I could make good money. But the thing that's always held me back is the not-so-small matter of health care for my family. I have a self-employed wife and two kids.

Is it possible for the self-employed to afford health care in this country?

Is there an association for your area of expertise? When I worked within the restaurant industry, the local chapter of the restaurant association offered group coverage prices for health/life insurance. I think that would be a good place to start.

Me and my wife do just that and we have found an HMO policy from Oxford for 510/mo to cover both of us.

When HSA start to catch on, we will switch to that with a catastrophic plan.

Anyone becoming self employed or starting a microbusines should join the NASE. They are such a valuable resource.

Our secretary is a member of this association and she is able to get cheap health insurance for her and her family. Don't remember the $$$, but both her and my boss agreed that it was a bargain.
