Hey everybody...I just wanted to know what is your opinion of Alexander Frei and how good of a striker he is. I also wanted to know what are his chances of leaving Rennes this season, considering that my fav team, Hertha, have scouted him and has been their long range target for awhile.

I know 2 French teams(Lyon and Marseille) are interested in him but I dont know how strong the interest is. I'm not sure if he is the top priority for those teams or not. I said a couple of months ago he would go to a Bundesliga team next year. It was purely an instinct I had. I think his style, the way he plays would fit well in Germany. If Hertha or any German team got him I think it would be a good signing for them.

What are his strengths?...he's scored a lot of goals, is he mainly a poacher? tall target man? Quick mobile striker?

Well, he is from the german speaking part of swiss, so a leaving to the bundesliga would not be surprising at all.
He is more a target man, with a great finishing. Not very kick though.
He has still one year of contract, Rennes staff is trying to renew it. But he is waiting to see if Rennes get an european spot this year. If not he could leave, yes.

Alex Frei is a clever and opportunistic box player, but can also score from distance or set pieces. He never gives up and has a tremendous winning attitude.

He has also been nominated for best player
in L1 this year, along with Essien (Lyon),
Juninho (Lyon) & Kalou (Auxerre).
Result will be known on May 22d.

Well my vote would go to Juninho. Essien I would vote 2nd and Frei 3rd.

Hmm...soudns like a good player for Hertha, although I hear Marseilles and PSG are interested in him...
Isn't he banned for the Swiss National Team?

No. In fact, he's our best scorer on the team.

The guy is a nice striker, but I don't know. His lack of pace is a bit of a concern. Reminds me of Stephane Guivarch'. Scores a ton of goals for his "provencial" club, but lets see what he does at a bigtime club. The guy just isn't that impressive to me.

Hmm...this guy reminds me of Bobic when we signed him :(
And that was a big mistake

The difference is, he also performs with Switzerland. And shall i remind you that there are approximatively 35000 provincial communes in France...
As for Guivarch', I'm somewhat confused why people like to bash him so much. He came very lately in the French squad ; he did not score in France98, you bet, he picked an injury in the first match, came back in the final and made what he had to make : attack. He brought the corner that led to the first goal iirc.
He retired in the shadow because of a long going knee injury, still he had been a multiple French championship top goal scorer. But he didn't score in 98, so people find it handy to retain what's negative about him. The guy wasn't a star, he just did his best which wasn't that lame...

Listen, Guivarch' is what he is.... A nice striker for a middle level team. I think his bad rep comes more from his multiple failed attempts at leaving Auxurre and not so much for his WC 98 performance.
I thought it was funny that you mentioned him setting up the corner for Zidane's first goal. That was a 1 v 1 that Tafferal saved for a corner (what should have been an easy goal). :)
Anyways, it will be interesting to see what this Frei guy can do. Guivarch' lacked pace and had no left foot. Frei lacks pace and has an ok, off foot. We'll see.

Sure...he's no Henry, but you make him sound slow (which he is not.)

I'm not saying that the guy is dragging a ball and chain, but he isn't exactly quick. Some players strike fear in the hearts of defenders, and Frei isn't one of them. He's very oportunisitic and excellent and positioning himself, but he isn't a guy that is going to create something out of nothing.

No, he's not going to run at three defenders (which is why I said he is a box player.)
PS: I would say box players create a lot out of nothing, wouldn't you?
