I know. The thought of the people of San Antonio actually having another entertainment option must be too much for them to handle. They probably didnt have this many editorials on the Iraq war.

Help!!!! A nuclear warhead called MLS is headed with target set to San Antonio, Texas. Need to build a fallout shelter and go underground really quickly!!!!!

The San Antonio article raises some fair questions, but as a Spurs fan I think it's safe to say that this guy is way off in trying to make the Spurs sound exciting ("high flying breakdancing"). Man can they be dull to watch at times.

“I don’t work for MLS or the TV. I don’t have anything to do with MLS. Obviously, I want the League to do well and survive going forward. My honest opinion is it’s difficult to get excited to go watch an MLS game, at least on the East Coast it is. Ten years ago, you are right when you speak about personalities. People were going to the stadium whether it was to watch somebody make a great play or because they hated a player. Whatever the reason was you always found a reason to go to the stadium.”
He does offer some interesting comments, but in opinion the above seems a little revisionist.

I'm a Spurs fan too, and I can safely say that no successful NBA team is as plodding and methodical as the Spurs have been over the last several years. Manu has punched it up a bit, but even so.

From the SA article:
"If the past year has shown us anything, it's that the San Antonio area loves the sport — if it involves the Mexican national team. Whether it will similarly love a professional soccer club that employs lesser attractions is a valid question."
I wonder if any of these critics in SA realize MLS's connection with the Mexican National Team and MFL Club teams via InterLiga through SUM (Soccer United Marketing). One would think that Mexican friendlies and InterLiga events would likely be huge draws in SA and (under the current proposed deal) the city could both charge rent for these additional events and share in the revenues (i think).
If SA says good-bye to a MLS side, they can probabably say good bye to these other events too.

Maybe Chivas USA should relocate to San Antonio.....
On the comments about the Spurs, you guys are right. It will be interesting to see if San Antonio plays Phoenix in the Western finals, which style of play wins out.

Yeah forget about San Antonio...playing on turf in a dome in front of 7 - 8,000 fans and having a press that can't stand the team. Who cares about the financial deal..the stadium sucks..turf sucks..and the press is embarassing and so will the crowds...it has Miami Fusion written all over it, except it would probably end up worse.

FIFA has asked MLS to cap expansion at 18 teams. Perhaps if we admit a Canadian team or two we can go to 20 -- the continental reach of the league might alter FIFA's view in our case. WE are not alone in this, they have asked the EPL to consider contracting to 18, as well as other divisions around the world that exceed the number. The object is to lighten the calendar, with fewer league games for the players, and a better chance to play well in internationals, including the World Cup.
At any rate, let's not waste a team in a location where we are not wanted, simple as that.

It can't be as simple as that, can it?
Not wanted by whom?
Isn't this view now a bit reactionary to some very reactionary journalism.
S.A. has got a solid offer out to MLS, but if they don't have the fans to buy season tickets of attend games at all, then yes, let's drop the idea.
But there's nothing wrong with giving it time before making a decision. Is MLS is in some huge rush to get to 14, 16 and then 18 teams?
S.A. is not NY/NJ, and S.A. is not Miami. I don't know what either of those points mean, but I thought I'd say it anyway.

How do we know most of San Antonio is against MLS in their town?
The only San Antonians I've noticed who are against MLS are a few blow-hard columnists and editorial writers at the Express News.

Exactly. I actually think SA is a market MLS could do really well in if marketed correctly. No MLB competition and a large hispanic population. All you are seeing now is a combination of journalists mad because they think all chances for the NFL are gone if MLS comes to town and journalists who are oppossed to public money for sports teams(which is understandable).
