Has anyone been to this before? Any recommendations as to where to stay?

Went to school at UT, so i can help you a bit with any questions. My friend went last year and he is going again this year. He loved it. Said it was well worth the money. Look at the band list, seems like a no-brainer to me. I might have to drive up to go.

We bought the tickets today. The line up is good.
How close to downtown is the park, any good hotels nearby - i mean non chain ones?

Zilker park is south of downtown, but not much. If you look at the 2004 map on the website there is a picture of the park and downtown in the background. With regards to hotels, you might try hotels on the southside of downtown or in the barton springs area. Both should put you close to the concert. Hell, Austin isn't that big of a city. So really can't go too far away unless you end up in Pflugerville, out on the Lake, or in Bastrop.
