Just a line to say the Conservative candidate for Enfield Southgate won the seat with a huge 9% swing and left Labour devestated. Fantastic achievement against the odds and a great reward for 4 weeks of really hard campaigning.

This was taken about 4.15am an hour and a half after the result was announced with a few members of a very tired campaign team.
The New Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate, David Burrowes, is the guy at the front right holding the glass of champagne.

I won't pretend to know the nuances of local politics in London. (That's nicephoras's job ;).) But how are the Conservatives on involvement in the European Union? I know that even as far back as Coal and Steel the Brits haven't been too fond of the idea, though from a purely economic standpoint, one would reckon it's a sensible measure that would have cachet with conservative politicians...

(Incidentally, what's the buzz -- if any -- on the Marks & Spencer case over in London? We don't hear too much over here, but it's hard to tell if that's because there's in fact little to be heard or because it's just not being reported this side of "the pond.")

I don't think so coach, some of us are old enough to remember the last time.

To paraphrase the Tories

"Are you remembering what we're remembering?"

Despite the huge unpopularity of Blair the Tories increased their share of the popular vote by a whopping 0%!

Naturally enough this 0% improvement resulted in a 33 seat gain in the commons!

Similarly, the 3% increase in the LibDem support resulted in an underwhelming 11 seat gain. What a carveup!

BTW - what Rick isn't telling you is that because of the huge resources that the Tories poured into Enfield Southgate, Labour won in Enfield North. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

In other news: Labour clung precariously on to Islington South & Finsbury. If only a few hundred of the Tories that wasted their votes had voted for the LibDem!! (I'm assuming you all know the relevance of that particular seat! ;))

Rick,

MAZEL TOV on your local victory! What are your thoughts about Blair getting reelected?

Have a great weekend.

I think it's great. Now arrogant pompous brits can't shake their finger at us like a doting nanny for "re-electing a leader who rushed us into war against Iraq with false pretences".

LOL....what? ME? Actually, Rick and I discussed the N. Ireland Issue and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict when he was in Chicago.
Very interesting and respectful exchange.
Neither of us got mad nor did we insult each other......good times.

And now for something completely different... ;)

Why is Rick the only Brit I know that, had he had the good fortune to be born in the great state of Texas, would have voted for Bush for Govenor twice even though he felt he may have been "a little soft on crime"?

Don't let 'em get you down, Rick! Someday you, me, and a host of others conservatives will RULE THE WORLD!! BWAA-HAA-HAA-HAAA!!!

Oh, damn, did I say that last bit out loud??? :p

I agree. The tories will cease to be relevant in 10 years time anyway (Not that they are now in any case).
