After watching Tommy Smyth's replay analysis of the Liverpool goal against Chelsea in Tuesday's CL match, I have to wonder:

Why is he allowed to speak without watching the monitor?

The man is wrong more often than not when reviewing replays. He rarely changes his original call, and without pausing to really *LOOK* at the play, he'll blather on about how the replay supports his original position.

I appreciate his colorful style and delivery (especially over many other announcers), but what he says is so often utter crap. It does not stand up to any scrutiny.

I shudder to think what viewers new to the sport must think.

Wow Ken,I couldn`t agree with you more man but still,I think you give this gut way too much credit. He is DIRE.
His "clearly over the line" call,in the Liverpool-Chelsea game, which he repeated at least 3 times ,not including the replay, when Derick Rae gave him ample oppertunity to save himself from deep embarrasment, was just astounding!
I seriously do not know a single person who follows the game who are not aggravated by his amateur observations-theres no way on Gods earth this guy has any background in the game, certainly he could never have played at any half-decent level because his lack of appreciation of the games challanges and skills is so obvious. There was one instance in the Liverpool game that really highlighted how poor his knowlege of the game is.It was when Tiago brilliantly controlled the ball at the top of Liverpools penalty area and got off a dangerous shot.It was a super piece of skill, his control with a magic first touch setting up his shot...Smith,IN REPLAY,mind you describes the control as "really poor" and dismisses the effort with some blarney crap!
No clue.None.And believe me every game he does is littered with similar ignorance.Hes so infuriating and like I say and I`m not joking,I have yet to come across a single individual who has anything positive to say about Tommy other than his accent.Hell ESPN,wake up after all this time and give the excellent Rae someone who actually knows the game.Seriously,is there anyone out there who can validate Tommy Smiths personal bio,how he got involved with the game,if he played or coached at any level?I checked the ESPN site and there was nothing.Anybody know what he did pre-MetroStars?

Allow me to be your first person. I think Tommy is just great. The duo of JP Dellacamera and Tommy Smyth was the best in the business. Derrek Rae does OK but I really miss JP on the Champions League games.

What kind of an fool are you did you see the score of the game 1-0 for you guessed LIVERPOOL. How the hell do you figure Smyth was wrong in his call. Have you seen proof that he got it wrong. Oh its your idea that he got it wrong. Liverpool and the Officals agreed with him. So what you think means ********. Liverpool are in the final and Smyths call has stood the test of time. If their was proof that it was not a goal we would have seen it by now.

Its kind of easy to guess how you are such a fool. The world did start before the Metrostars came along. Smyth has been the voice of the Champions League on ESPN since the early 90. You would not know that because you did not know about soccer back then. Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth are a class act the very best that we have here in the US.

You can't be serious!!!!!I hope not, my head's about to explode. Tommy Smyth is fun sometimers and good sometimes, but he's got the accent and excitability above all and that's how he sells.

I deeply dislike Tommy Smyth. The cute "back of the ol' onion bag" line is way overused, and I rarely think he adds anything constructive or insightful to the excellent commentary by Derek Rae. In fact, I sense sometimes that Rae is embarrassed by Smyth's nonsense. If they'd mute Tommy Smyth's mic for a game it would definitely be an improvement.

Maybe you should seek out some help in your area. Anybody who deeply dislikes an announcer, could probaly do with lying on somebodys couch for a while. Get back to us after treatment.

Is that you, Tommy?

And for the record, let me clear up that I dislike the announcing, not the person. Should be clear from the replay. :D

If it was I would have too much money to be talking to you.
