As the old saying goes, nothing in the world is free. So how much does your National team pay its players? Are there bonuses for playing in the world cup as opposed to an exhibition game?

SouthKorea: This is what I remember, everybody has to serve something like 3-7 years in the military (I don't remember how many years). I'm pretty sure that the soccer players from the national team are except from serving in the military.

My personal opinion:
I see playing for the national team exactly the same as serving in the military.
Actually, I think playing for the national team is more important than serving in the military, why?:
- You are serving your country
- You could give something to your fellow countrymen would value for years and that politicians can't give them: Happiness and become proud of being from your country (just think of people in Senegal when they beat France in WC2002)
- You don't have to grab a gun, shoot people, risk your life or anything like that.

That is why I don't think a soccer player should EVER refuse a call to their national team. And that's why I don't respect players that "retire" from their national teams.

That's also why I'm proud of being from SouthAmerica where you hear players say: "YOU CAN NEVER RETIRE FROM YOUR NATIONAL TEAM" because if you are 50 but you are one of the best 11 in your country, you should go and represent your country and try your best.

Nope, all footballers have to serve the standard two year military service, though there are several military football clubs including one professional one that they can join whilst serving their time.

The 2002 World Cup squad got exemptions from the two year stint for reaching the semi-finals of the tournament and instead they only have to serve a month of basic military training. Song Chong-guk finished his month in January prior to joining Suwon from Feyenoord, Lee Chun-soo is serving his month now before his transfer from Real Sociedad to Ulsan is completed and Seol Ki-hyeon will do his month after the English league season finishes.

The Korean government also gives exemptions to athletes in other sports who attain Olympic medals or otherwise distinguish the country.

Dude I dont think anyone should be excempt in Korea seeing as you live next door to N korea and seoul is within sheling distance of the DMZ. My cousin was in osan and said up at the dmz the N koreans have tunnels and all kinda weird stuff going on there. I feel bad for S korea and all koreans in general including N koreans who live under a totaly inumane regieme who would rather starve their people and build weapons instead. It sucks Korea has gotten the shaft for a long time , before communism they had to deal with the japanese. I just dont know how you people can eat kimchi though :D

lol yay my 1000th post now wheres my cookie!

I've heard on good authority that most National team players get paid in monkeys. For their first cap the are presented with a juvenile monkey which only performs light duties round the house, like dusting and the occasional washing up of the dishes. But as the more caps they get, the more the monkeys they are presented with are capable of doing. 10 caps and they can change bedding and a little bit of ironing. At 20 caps, washing the car, fixing a nice roast and baking a cake. Only a few players have reached the magical 100 cap monkey (Shilton, Matheus, Beckenbaur) which can strip the engine of your Aston Martin down while simultainously building you a new extension to house your new games room.
