MONTREAL, May 4, 2005 – The Montreal Impact will have a new home. The Saputo Stadium, a 13,500-seat stadium, will open its doors in the actual Technoparc and will be part of a larger sport complex designed specifically for soccer: the Complexe Place du Public. The news was confirmed at a press conference, Wednesday, by Montreal Impact president, Joey Saputo, the mayor of Montreal, Gérald Tremblay, the mayor of the Burrough of Sud-Ouest, Jacqueline Montpetit, and Mr. Lino Saputo.

“The Impact’s primary mission has always been to develop soccer in Quebec. But to continue to progress, we had to innovate for the future, ” said Montreal Impact president, Joey Saputo. “With a lack of fields on the territory, the need for high-level installations on the island of Montreal and a Claude-Robillard Stadium that was getting smaller and smaller, we had to find an innovative solution to accommodate the sport in order to ensure its development.”

Located north of the Bonaventure autoroute and south of the downtown area, the Complexe Place du Public will have an overall surface area of 1.6 million square feet and will be entirely financed by private funds to the cost of 15 million dollars. The Saputo family announced they will donate 7.5 million dollars in the project.

“I’m extremely proud of the Complexe Place du Public, declared Mr. Lino Saputo. “For my family and me this project is an ideal opportunity to give something back to the community that has supported us so outstandingly since the founding of our company in 1954. I’m already enjoying the prospect of soccer players, young ones as well as older ones, practicing their favourite sport in these high-level facilities.”

The new complex will have three soccer fields that will be available for regional soccer clubs and associations. The stadium, which could be expanded to 17,000 seats, could also host regional, provincial, national or international soccer competitions.

The Complexe Place du Public will be managed by a non-profit organization whose mission will be to promote the development of soccer by offering high-level installations to the citizens of the Greater Montreal region.

The Impact won the First Division United Soccer Leagues last season in front of a crowd of 13,648 spectators at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. The Impact finished the 2004 season with an average of 9,279 fans per game, a team record which eclipsed the previous mark of 7,236 spectators per game set in 2003.

Too bad somebody like Frank Stronach couldn't be persuaded to do something similar in terms of private financing in Toronto. FK Austria Toronto anyone? On the plus side for TO it shows York U what's readily doable for their 15 mill if federal and provincial funding were to disappear.

To my neighbors above. I want to say congratulations for your first true Soccer Specific Stadium. To everyone in Montreal congratulations for Le Impact, du Montreal getting this stadium.

I hope this will bring you good luck for The Impact as well as the Canadian Soccer Association. Sounds like you guys have a good home for any World Cup Qualifiers.

Wish the surface was natural grass and not turf, but we shall see.

Once again Congratulations.

What is the status of this stadium project?

Also, if/when it is built, what is its potential seating capacity?

PRESS RELEASE: September 21, 2007
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SAPUTO STADIUM IS 75% COMPLETE

http://www.montrealimpact.com/News/News.aspx?language=EN&ArticleID=789&Focus=0

MONTREAL – Construction of the Saputo Stadium is now 75 percent complete and is being carried out within the expected time frame. Construction should be finalized by December 2007.

Among the latest works completed, the 120 x 80-meter grass surface has been fixed (110 x 70-meter field). Also, the structure of the administrative offices is now erected.

“I am very satisfied because we are respecting the schedule that we had initially set out,” said Executive vice-president of the Montreal Impact and Saputo Stadium Richard Legendre. “Since it is natural turf, it was important to lay it in September so that it could take root before winter. With the grass, the view is spectacular and we can witness the stadium taking shape.”

Located on the corner of Sherbrooke and Viau Streets, the Saputo Stadium, will be a 13,000-seat soccer stadium, which represents a 2,500-seat increase from Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

The construction of the project, estimated at $15 million, is entirely privately funded. Half of this amount -$7.5 million- was donated by the Saputo family. The new stadium will become the home of the Impact as of the 2008 season.

Why are there bleachers in the semi-distance (to the right) on the first picture, but not on the second?

Small thing of no consequence.

It's almost certain at least some of the game would be played there. Especially if there is a game to be played against Haiti. That would draw much, much better in Montreal that Toronto.

Although since many of those extra would be Haiti fans perhaps Toronto would be better. But to ensure home crowd support games against the likes of Jamaica or Trinidad & Tobago should definitely be played in Montreal.

The stadium looks fantastic and deserving of hosting at least some Canadian games.

Agreed. The 'after' is probably meant to showcase the impressive facade.

The stadium will most certainly host a Canada WCQ game unless the Impact get into some ridiculous strife with the CSA.

Having a Haiti game in Montreal is a recipee for disaster. You want to hold games where you can expect the LEAST amount of foreign support.
