Seeing PSV losing out to Milan on the basis of the away goal rule ameks me wonder if this rule should be changed. They played the better over the two legs and did beat Milan 3-1 tonight and it is really unfortunate they didnt get to advance. It's a little unfair they whould have to score 4 to get through while all Milan needed was 3.
Maybe the rule should be changed so extra time is played if the score is even at the end of 90 minutes and then use the away goal rule after 120 mins if neccessary.
Thoughts?

Milan won the first game 2-0 at home.
PSV won the second game 3-1 at home.
3-3 at the end. But because Milan got that 1 goal on the road and PSV got no goal on the road, the rule says Milan wins the tie.

I'm not sure about only counting away goals after extra time, as this gives one of the teams an advantage during that period - one team playes 120 minutes away from home, the other 90 minutes.
You either need to leave it as it is (not perfect) or discount them all together meaning a greater likelihood of penalties (again not perfect). Ultimately there is no other tie-breaker other than a third game at a neutral venue (which was used in the past) or tossing a coin (again has been used before) but each of these are less preferable than the first two.

I think they should just throw the away goals rule away. Whoever scores the most goals should win. If the aggregate is a tie, like Milan-PSV, you go into overtime.

I think they should play extratime and then apply away goals - which the way English domestic competitions do it. yes, one team gets 30 mins extra to score an away goal but the other team gets 30 mins extra playing at home.

how about using a Home Goals Rule.
would this not encourage more offensive football?
in the case of AC 2-0 and then PSV 3-1, PSV would advance even though the series is tied after two legs.
is there really a good solution to an equal goals 2-game series?

Nope. Keep it they way it is...
In either case (i.e. no rule), you the potential of a team bunkering. Better the visiting team bunkering than the home team.
The rule applies to both teams. PSV should have scored a goal in Milan. They didn't. Milan needed to score a goal. They did.
Lucky. Poor marking. Other team played better. Welcome to the Champions League Cup.

:::hint hint:::
Bayern v. Chelsea....tsk tsk tsk......damn rule!
I still think they should keep it, makes that goal extra special, you know?

Its more difficult to score away most times than at home so I see keep this rule!

In my opinion the away goal rule only makes sense because of the TWO legs. I mean that if the away advantage won't count, wouldn't be better to just play one definitive game?

yes psv were the better team over the two legs (by far id say)
but milan know that they arent what they showed these two matches
they can play MUCH better than they did
ok now with the away goals rule:
i think its a bit unfair but we should keep it because it gives the coaches a more difficult job
they will have to use very good tactics for their home defensive match and their away match where they attack
so it makes us know which manager is the best as well
TBH, i dont like the away goals rule, but oh well i say just keep it
teams get lucky (like milan today) but thats football

This is the best way. If the away goal was not counted at extra time, it will be unfair for the away team. They just happened to play the decisive match away. They should not surrender an extra 30 minutes advantage to the other team.

yeah, as much as it sucks right now, it's the way it is...and yeah it keeps teams from bunkering down.
Keep it the way it is.

"Away goals" make it easier for a tiebreaker over 180 minutes. UEFA and FIFA don't generally like the extra time.
I'd prefer a "sudden death" (golden goal) on top of the "goals away".
And I'd definitely prefer "sudden death" over the penalty shoot-out. I even prefer an MLS style "1 vs. GK" shoot-out more than a penalty shoot-out.
But I ain't running FIFA.
As to PSV, they didn't convert their chances in Milan and the "Italians" got a perfect ball bounce to score on the 90th min (JD Thomasson) and that's what the knock-out stages are about.

I never liked the away goal rule. UEFA and FIFA should make it like Copa Libertedores, with no away goal rule

Each team still gets five kicks, but the player starts with the ball 30 yards from the goal. Upon the referee's whistle, you have 30 seconds to score a goal. If the goalie touches the ball, the play is over, therefore eliminating rebound goals.
