Turned on the TV this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see the
ESPN Deportes telecast of the CL semi playing on ESPN! sweet!
Dont't know if this was a national thing or just a local cable move, but I'm
not complaining. Of course this is no good to folks who are at work & didn't
set their VCR !

Someone told me this happened for leg 1 also and I didn't believe him. Weird.

I think what happened is ESPN is showing the Braves v Marlins MLB game, so the game is blacked out in those areas. Way cool that instead of ESPNEWS or ESPNU you're getting ESPN Deportes.
Does ESPN not hate soccer after all?

Oh, I hadn't thought about the blackout rules - I guess that would explain it.
Marlins & D-Rays games on ESPN and Extra Innings are blacked out in Central FL to protect FSN Florida although ironically the major cable co. in this area Bright House does not even carries Sun Sports only. But that may change soon as Fox now owns Sun and FSN. Bright house usually runs ESPNEWS during blackouts. BH is somewhat soccer friendly as they often list upcoming
EPL games on their website

Anyway you look at it Bigtw, it sure beats the heck out of all those times in the past when soccer telecasts are preempted or delayed for one reason or another. Very cool that you were actually there to enjoy it.

It supposedly aired in Spanish on ESPN in the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins TV territories ONLY. ESPN Deportes and Setanta Channel owned the official distribution rights to the game.

It was on ESPN2 here in Atlanta (the ESPN Deportes feed).
I wonder if the broadcast was any better than the Setanta Sports USA broadcast, which constantly froze and skipped (especially on the second PSV goal).
But yes, what a pleasant surprise for us here in Atlanta.
I watched the game at the Brewhouse in downtown (via Setanta), but I know people who were surprised to see it on ESPN2.

In Chicago, my TIVO schedule said it was ESPN2, but what actually appeared was some stupid basketball show. Thanks, guys.

$12 a month and they can't even get a decent picture? Wow. Nice channel.

i got a fine signal with no freezing or skipping at all on setanta on directv.
setanta sports is available not only on directv but also on a satellite called Telstar 5. in fact the Telstar 5 one has been around a lot longer than directv. ThrashBoy makes it sound like he was watching in a bar, and if that is the case it is most likely the Telstar 5 version of the channel, since it's only been around about a week on directv. that satellite sends out a weaker signal so it could be a problem related to signal loss. if there was any bad weather (even a little rain) it could interfere with a Telstar 5 signal.

Slightly OT, but they've had a soccer play as a top ten play for 3 straight days...Tues. morning, the goal in the Arsenal game. Wed., Dudek's save of a free kick. Thurs., AC's goal.

The schedule should have changed a week ago. It was originally on mine, but disappeared.

I've my Ku dish pointing at Telstar 5 for years. The Setanta channel on T5 was scrambled. Only in rare occasions do they turn off the encryption.
Telstar 5 used to have Dubai Sports that used to have lots of European soccer. Right now, the only soccer on that bird is from TV Romania International.

My magazine that's printed up a few months in advance, and recieved in the mailbox near the end of the previous month said it was supposed to be on, with the usual schedule (starting at 2:30, Hot List at 2:45.)
ESPN2's ticker on Tuesday said it was supposed to be on as well. However, the online channel guide at Time Warner's Columbus website said nothing about soccer.
2:30 came and it was NBA inside stuff.
Sounds like I should have waited a few more minutes.

yes it's usually scrambled, but the bars that have rights to show it have the access card that allows them to view the signal. if someone was watching in a bar and they were seeing poor picture quality, freezing, and jumping, they were most likely watching the T5 version of the channel.
