It all hinges on the York University stadium for the World Youth Cup. The Argos pulled out of the project earlier this week so it's looking a bit shakey at the moment since it depends on federal funding and there could be a general election very shortly. There is a CSA press conference later today which will probably announce that the CSA is proceeding on the assumption that a 20,000 seat stadium will be built in Toronto.

It has been annouced already and the CSA will go ahead and plan without the Argos and it will be a 20,000 seat stadium.

Here's the story. Victoria rather than Calgary as Radio Canada had reported a couple of days ago in their story about the Impact stadium.

MLS was coming to Toronto, but now that the Argo's & York University,
quitting on the project the stadium issue is more or less dead just like,
Toronto's chance of finally landing a professional soccer team.

Its premature to say the idea is dead. The Stadium is going ahead according the the CSA. The deadline to get shovels in the ground is October, so they have the whole summer to scale it dorn to a 20,000 seat $5o million stadium. The CSA say putting an MLS team in the stadium is a goal, and the MLS is keen to come to Toronto. After all th MLS team will be the money spinner that makes having the stadium worth the effort. York Varsity teams cant fill a 5000 seater much less a 20000 seater stadium so I believe MLS must be coming if York/CSA are pressing ahead with it.

The Csa say a lot of thing back in 1986 they said Canada has made the big time in soccer by qualifing for the World Cup and that a lasting Canadian league would be made. Well yes we did make the world cup ....on the other hand the Canadian league has been tried twice and failed twice. If an election is called and should be soon what if the PC party gets in and pulls the federal government money off the table ( since this was a liberal project, expect it, you know you can't trust the PC party of Canada.) Where would that leave the stadium. Until they break the ground for the stadium i have concerns it will not be built.

So what you are saying is we should vote Liberal to get the stadium?

I doubt the PCs would pull the plug on the funding. They are trying to build support in Ontario which is where this looming election will be decided. Killing the stadium would be used by Liberals to portray them as anti-Ontario , so the $35 million (which isnt a huge amount by government standards) will probably survive.

Lets hope it survives. Besides Canada has a better chance of winning the
world Cup then the tories have of winning Ontario, :)
