View Full Version : I want to become a referee

Hi all,

I read the "Real How to Become a Referee" thread but am not convinced I completely understand what I need to do. Is there a national certification as opposed to a regional one? The reason I ask is because I currently live in DC, but am moving to NC later in the summer. I would like to start refereeing in DC, but would I get any credit in NC or would I have to start over again?

Thanks in advance!

The training and testing is done by the state associations, under the auspices of the USSF. So if you pass the test and get your badge in DC, you are qualified to work in NC. You will, in one sense, have to start all over again by having to prove to local assignors that you know what the heck you're doing with a whistle, but you won't have to get retested until the next year (since certification is an annual process). When you move, email the SRA in DC and in NC to let them know you're a) leaving D.C., and b) coming to NC.

Since DC is really NoVA/MD/DC, does anyone know which organization is the best to contact regarding getting started? I checked ussoccer.com, but there don't seem to be any clinics this side of the Mississippi anytime soon.

Here are a few sites you may want to check out:

Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program: http://www.vadcsoccerref.com/

NC-Soccer Net: http://nc-soccer.net/forum/portal.php

The DC-Va site has some certification information and guidance also. There is a Grade 8 clinic starting May 12 in Alexandria I believe - check out the Clinic search feature.

Lots of info on the NC Site, you might start by checking out the Ask The Ref Forum on the NC Site, lots of good info there.

Good luck

The NCSRA website is the pits, not good for much information. Where will you be moving in NC? I can direct you to the Area Referee Administrator and/or assigners who are responsible for the section to which you are moving.

I'm a moderator on nc-soccer.net - it's a good forum. Post your question under Ask the Ref and you'll get some responses.

NCYSA does not have a fabulous website (ncsoccer.org), but it has some basic ref information, and you can also search for ref assignors in your area.

Thanks to all who replied!

I just completed the new referee (Grade 8) class. :)

Now I need some equipment...I've found tons of referee starter kits on various websites. Does anyone have a favorite?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation on shoes? Are there any to stay away from? Any that seem particularily popular?

Thanks for all your help so far!
