I was curious to know what brand (or style) referee shorts you own, and where did you buy them.

Reason I ask is I've had my Adidas shorts for 5 years now and was looking for an additional pair. I bought an XL short on officialsports.com two months ago and had to return it. When I put them on, I looked like John Stockton (in other words, I looked like the NBA players from the early 70's with their skimpy shorts :D ). Not only that, I thought the quality of the short was poor.....much thinner than I would have liked.

I dropped by a soccer shore in NJ yesterday, and I saw Doss XXL shorts (who are notorious for their small cuts). The XXL was probably the equivalent of an Adult Large....maybe even AM.

Why is it so hard to find shorts that actually go down close to your kneecap? I even saw the AR who did the Mexico/Poland game on Wednesday night pull down his shorts on two occasions. I'm not looking for basketball shorts where they're dragging on the floor, but I don't want shorts that are really short (no pun intended) either.

Is there a referee short someone can recommend that is similar to the one I have now, which almost goes down to my kneecap?

Most referee shorts I have found are the o' so attractive tight fitting shorts. Perhaps the higher ups think these make you look more professional then ones that go down further. I have a pair from OSI that are their basic shorts that aren't too bad, but I have also found some random basketball shorts that are black and have two side pockets that I use most of the time. I don't think you really NEED something specific for referees (unless you love that back pocket)

I bought a pair of Black Nike Shorts with pockets at the local Sporting goods store. They go down to just above the knee, good material and wear. Cost a few dollars more, but worth it in my opinion. I do keep the old ref shorts in the bottom of the bag - but strictly as emergency back-ups.

I recently bought several pairs of very nice adidas referee shorts on eBay of all places from a couple of different people in England. They were very cheap, but still sealed in their original bags. Something seemed a bit fishy about them as the ones I got from one source had price tags in Japanese yen. But they were less than $20/pair. They look good and fit good and are made with their ClimaCool fabric. One back pocket with a little velcro closure and nice deep side pockets. I can't believe no one in the US sells these shorts. I had gotten a pair from Eurosport a year or two ago but they don't sell them anymore.

The one's I have right now are Adidas and I was also shocked that I couldn't find any Adidas referee shorts online from reputable places like EuroSport. It's a shame you had to buy from outside the country just for a lousy pair of shorts.

The back pocket is very nice for the easy-access yellow card.

I've been wearing the climalite addidas shorts for the past few season, and I relaly like them. Not too tight, not too short (in size XL).

Yeah thats what I use the side pockets for. I always worry my big butt is going to throw a card out of my back pocket unless it is velcroed.

I keep the red one in the back pocket. Yellow in the right side pocket and an extra yellow in the right shirt pocket if I want to be more dramatic.

I worked with a referee a couple of weeks ago who mixed up his cards and put the red one in the side pocket. The coach (and the referee) were surprised when he produced the red card instead of the yellow one.

Interesting. The standard Official Sports UK shorts I got a few years ago were very long and baggy, much more so for the advertised size that I got off the RA.

The thing that annoys me about shorts is that recently, they all seem to have just the one arse pocket, and only rarely do they have something to hold them closed. The said RA shorts have two, both of which close, and because I wear them a lot more often I now like keeping a card in each of them, which keeps the side and top pockets (there's another bug-bear, shirts with only one top pocket) all free for various storage needs.

I'm not one of those tubby guys you usually see at high school games. :D

I'm 5 '11 (with cleats on) and weigh about 200 pounds. When I put the short on, it kind of reminded me of the old tennis greats like Bjorn Borg. I guess I could have lived with the snug fit but they weren't long enough for my taste.

I am 6' 3" 220, I order from Score. They manufacture their own products. I have them add 2" to the inseam of their top of the line shorts. They normally set on the order until the next time they are manufacturing shorts, and I get them anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks after I order.

Here are the Nike shorts I mentioned:

Again, they cost a bit more ($35) but wear very well.. :)

You're not going to believe this, but I have the same exact shorts which use for basketball.

I've worn them for in-town Recreation level games in my town, but anything other than that, I've felt weird wearing them.....although I've been tempted to do so.
