This article by Paul Hayward of The Telegraph sums up why Chelsea are worthy champions. All of this nonesense about buying the title is white noise. Teams do not win without the whole unit working together. The sporting landscape is littered with expensive, star-laden teams that underdeliver. Its one thing to splash the cash and another to actually win.

I like the part about JT & Super Frank being the Lennon & McCartney of Football.

It'll take more than one league title to get that name. Sorry.

And there were some minor factual inaccuracies, like Cech being the first Mourinho signing when he and Robben were actually signed while Ranieri was still the manager (in title at least).
But a great article nonetheless.

firstly. there is no disputing that a champion team wins championships, not a team of champions.
secondly, u say money does not buy team cohesion. doesnt mourinho have something to do with that? i wonder how he was hired

If we’re dealing with modern history I do believe that only four teams have won the Premiership and <st1 ="">Liverpool</st1> are not one of those four teams

I liked this part:
If anyone seriously thinks Chelsea are 'boring', they are either a Man Utd or Arsenal fan or are not watching enough football.

Of course it takes more than having good players to win the title. Chelsea has been a great team, but that would not have been possible without buying all these players. There is no getting around that. If that bothers you, which it shouldn't, then oh well. However, I think it does bother many non-Chelsea fans.

Well, you peasant, since you asked...I'll say, eh, three. Why not?
the "Lennon and McCartney of football" is implying long careers of extreme consistency and is something you would say about players are full on "been there, done that" veterans. People like Ryan Giggs or Thierry Henry or Rivaldo or etc, etc, etc. I'm not saying that your guys won't do it one day, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
And no, it's not a slam against Chelsea. Sheesh, lighten up...you just won the freaking league title.

To carry the Liverpool analogy out a bit, JT and FL will be the Lennon and McCartney of their era when they've had a run of success like Pool did in the 70s-80s. So, when they win 8 more. Does that sound right?

I guess my question here, and this is serious, is where does this 189 - 200 million figure come from? Does anyone have a breakdown? Is there a link to Chelsea (and for the matter of comparison, Arsenal and Man Utd) transfer fees?

you did buy the title to the extent that if you didnt have the money of abramovich you would still be where you were last season but you are worthy winners none the less terry is quality

IF only you lot what spend SOME money you might begin to emulate the success of your European cup winning team - at least win a place in Europe

Chelsea merely spent a lot of money in a short time period as oppossed to other top European clubs spending for years and years and years and years

Thanks for the link.
In the last two years, the following teams have acquired:
Chelsea
Cech..........................................7million
Robben....................................12 million
Ferreira..................................13 million
Kezman......................................5 million
Drogba.....................................24 million
Tiago..........................................8 million
Carvalho...................................19 million
Geremi........................................7 million
Bridge........................................7 million
Duff...........................................17 million
Parker........................................10 million
Cole.............................................6.5 million
Veron..........................................12.5 million
Mutu............................................15 million
Crespo.........................................16 million
Makelele.....................................16 million
Arsenal
Reyes...........................................10.5 million
Cesc.............................................. 2.5 million
van Persie...................................2-4 million (still unreported)
Manchester United
Rooney.........................................20 million
Kleberson....................................5.9 million
Ronaldo........................................12.4 million
Smith...............................................6 million
Saha...............................................12.8 million
Heinze.............................................6.9 million
Liverpool
Cisse...............................................14 million
Luis Garcia...................................6 million
Morientes......................................6 million
Kewell.............................................5 million
Boro
Viduka.............................................4.5 million
Everton
Beattie.............................................6 million
Tottenham
Reid.................................................4.7 million
Dawson..........................................3.3 million
Kanoute..........................................4 million
Defoe..............................................6 million
Looking at that list, I ask you, how can you possibly say you didn't buy the title?
OK, OK, Terry and Lamps are both English boys, and according to the quoted article, someone at Chelsea recognized Cech's greatness a long time ago. And, you've already shipped out the dead wood from the list: Mutu, Veron, Crespo. And you've had to pay more given the size of your pocketbook: Drogba. And you have a great coach. You would so obviously have not won this year with Ranieri. And Mourinho's done great things with Cole and Gudjohnsen. And history is littered with teams that spend an insane amount of money and win nothing.
But, if we leveled the playing field and every team had 20 million to spend (and Chelsea only had 20 million to spend) don't you think the league would look differently? Don't you think that Allardyce and Dowie and McLaren and Jol (not to mention Fergie and Arsene) would make the Premiership look a little different?
Chelsea deserved this title. And as someone who has been loyal to his team for many bad years (I became an Arsenal fan in the mid-70s), I congratulate you on your championship. Enjoy it. But at the end of the day you gotta admit you bought the title.

i totally agree but it doesn't help when you have a 80 year old chairman who is obviouslly stuck in the 1800's. and that is easy for you to say to as you have the wealthiest person in football as your chairman. o and we have 20 million to spend this summer so hopefully ( you may laugh as it is small compared to what you have but hey thats our chairman atleast hes giving us money now. as they say history repeats its self

These 2 statements don't exactly make sense if out together. Not to go into this soooooooooooooooo over-used statement, but you can't deserve something that was just simply bought. Yes, the money helped, a lot, but the players and the coaches worked their @sses off, so thus, the titled was won fairly and no one can argue that. RA's money helped, but it's the combination of players, team work, and a great coach that won the title. We never went out and bought the so-called galacticos, we bought good players. To put those players together and make them work as a solid unit requires a lot more than $$$$, so Val, if you are so kind to state that we deserve it, don't make your own statement disappear by stating right after that we bought it.

Rooney was 27 million quid (7 million to be paid) and you seem to have forgotten the 30 million for Rio and the 30 million spent on Veron
if you were also to look at the spending of Liverpool and Man Ure over the last 5 years I think you'd have a clearer picture of buying/spending and winning the title
Remember also that English player of the year and <st1:city w:st="on"><st1 =""> Chelsea</st1></st1:city> team capa-tain was a product of our yoof system whereas Arsenal don’t have a single player from their yoof academy in their side
we have discussed all this so many other times in so many other threads
we are CHAMPIONS and I haven't got the time and I just cannot be bothered to discuss this with you today, sorry - do a search and you'll get all the replies you'll ever need - good luck
