What was it? Altough I have distant memories of WC82 I have following the World Cup since Mexico' 86 when I was 10. Before that I've only seen clips and highlights of past WCs, mostly 1970 when the famous Brazil vs England match ocurred. For me it stands as probably the best WC game ever.

'82 was my first World Cup and I thought West Germany-France was more exciting than Italy-Brazil.

I'd put '82 WGermany-France and '70 Italy-WGermany atop my list.
Not sure which one to vote for on the poll. :)

There is a myth that France-Germany '82 was this
wonderful, heart-lifting game. But let me tell you: it
was not, not by a long shot. What really happened in
that game was scandalous: Germany's keeper, Toni
Schumacher, absolutely mauled Patrick Battison with
a forearm check, knocking him unconscious--and
knocking out a few of his teeth. And was Schumacher
given a red card? No, not so much as a yellow .
He went on to decisively win the penalty shoot-out for
Germany, when he shouldn't have been playing to
begin with. It was a terrible end to the game, and too
tough on the French, who had a great team in '82.

Like Ombak, I think '70 was the best World Cup, and
though Brazil '70 was the greatest of teams, Italy
didn't quite give the crowd enough drama in the final
(tho the first 60 minutes were tense). I'll vote for Italy-
West Germany '70, a classic match that you must watch
if you haven't already. (The game's free on FIFA's site).

The best game ever, and therefore the best World Cup game ever was the 1954 semi final between Hungary and Uruguay.

West Germany - France 1982 was the most exciting - and most disturbing - match ever played in the World Cup finals

It's one of the poll's options.

From what a relative tells me (he's been following soccer for a long time), the Brazil-England matchup in '70 was the best game he ever saw. I'll take his word for it.

Not the greatest game of all-time but definitely on the top five of my list. Dumitrescu's free-kick is the best free-kick I've ever seen.
