From the "Game Plan" article:
Mayor Ed Garza and other proponents have failed to justify it adequately. Whatever else you think of what else was written in this editorial, this sentence is undeniably true. This proposal has run up against a virtual stone wall of opposition from the local media, and Garza should probably have done a lot better to refute arguments like these.

It's two bad that the editorial is wrong though. It seemed to me that his main argument was that the soccer team would hurt the other events that the Alomodome brings in, because of revenue sharing and taking 20 days away from the schedule. First of they only share revenue on the events that they co-promote. Second, the 20 games are still events that will have a positive economic impact just like the boat and gun shows that the editor wants to bring in.

Maybe San Antonio gave away to much, but it isn't as bad as this guy makes out.

Also, for the people comparing this to Salt Lake, wait for them to start shelling out money and see how positive the press will be. There is always going to be opposition to multimillion-dollar projects.

Second, the 20 games are still events that will have a positive economic impact just like the boat and gun shows that the editor wants to bring in. Well, really only events that bring out-of-towners have economic impact. Depends on what the boat and gun shows draw regionally, I guess, vs the MLS club. But you have a point.

And an even better point is that there's no specific date MLS would deny the AlamoDome if there was an event they wanted (and, like you said, MLS would get no money from those events).

Maybe San Antonio gave away to much, but it isn't as bad as this guy makes out. Certainly. I also wish the Mayor would come and rebut the loss stats bandied about so much. In 2001, I think the description of MLS is that article was close to being accurate. In 2005, it's not very close to the true story.

Also, for the people comparing this to Salt Lake, wait for them to start shelling out money and see how positive the press will be. There is always going to be opposition to multimillion-dollar projects. There already has been in SLC, and it'll be its own fight. Real are armed with Dave Checketts,e asily the ebst salesman in town, to help, to combat that. One hopes some good salesmanship comes to SA.

A-League. Sorry, USL First Division. What a ********ing waste of talent. That jackass should have gone to MLS.

It's not like he couldn't have taken classes elsewhere and worked it out so they'd count towards his UW degree.

sort of read like there were some Donovan-esque issues behind his decision, UW, the missus, etc.

wonder if opting for USL might not hurt him in years to come, MLS coaches questioning his drive, possibly...

Nice article, but I have to take issue with one thing:
When Adu and company last visited Kansas City in the regular season, 26,233 fans came out to watch. While that's nothing for a Chiefs or Royals game...

Sorry Mike. Chiefs, yes. Royals, no. Check your facts next time.

http://www.canoe.ca/Baseball/attendance.html
Royals average attendance
2004: 20,768
2003: 22,819
2002: 17,182
2001: 18,968

And so on.

Even back when they were good:
1985: 26,375

We made it to the series in 80. Won 3 or 4 division championships around then going toe to toe with the Yankees - but yeah, for the last 20 years its been a whole lot of suck. Aught-five is shaping up to be the worst yet! 2-12 at home so far.

Oh man, what a flashback...Amos Otis, Willie Wilson, Dan Quisenberry, The Mad Hungarian. Maybe being a Royals fan is what has made me so ambivalent about baseball.....

For some ungodly reason they let John Schuerholz get away. Think he's done a few good things for Atlanta? He's kinda like the Brett Favre of the Royals (the Falcons traded Favre away because he was a party boy drunk at the time) but KC hasn't found their Michael Vick.
