Identify the club's biggest weakness (i.e. Funds, Player quality, poor coaches, poor facilities) and start to fix them.
For your training schedules, Add Physio's to them. In Pre-Season ADD ALL PHYSIOS and ALL COACHES.
Look for cheap, but very good and unproven coaches to add to the club they will help the players improve quicker. Check the youth/reserves for good players who deserve a first team chance.
And fine-tune tactics to maximize players individual abilities.
And, if you're short on funds (playing 2nd division you probably are), look for players available on loan. You can usually find talented youngsters benched with their 1st division teams eager for some action. When I start with crap teams I usually go for a good striker (high on speed, acceleration and finishing) and a good playmaker (high on passing, crossing and stamina). That usually does the trick in the lower divisions.
And most important, keep on playing. You'll learn from experience. In my first game a managed to get Arsenal relegated, in my latest I made a 3rd division swedish team Champion's League winners after 10 seasons.

Put the tactic into your tactics folder, which is normally in this location: C:\Program Files\Eidos\CM 03-04\user data\tactics
or
C:\Program Files\Eidos\CM 04\user data\tactics
depending on which version you have.
...putting games in your system directory? That's soooo Last Century. :D

Do the stadiums ever get upgraded in CM4? I played Plymouth for 10 years, and for the last 7 I was assured that the stadium would be expanded, but it never was.
I want to start a game with a conference team, but not if I get them to the Premier League and they still have to play in a 5000 seat stadium.

How do you guys go for 10 seasons?! I go for like a season and a half and get frustrated and start over...
Are the names of the Div 3 English players made up or are they real players? Cuz they seem to have a lot of the same last names of premiership players...

Good old CM3...
Not giving up is the key... I had horrible games with teams going nowhere, but now...
Recruited by Marseille after the end of 2013/14 due to my good reputation, here are my last ten Division 1 season result
2014/15 1st place, semi-final UEFA
2015/16 1st place
2016/17 1st place
2017/18 1st place
2018/19 1st place
2019/20 1st place
2020/21 1st place
2021/22 1st place
2022/23 1st place, CL champions
2023/24 1st place - 10 in a row, CL Champions back-to-back
Going for the three-peat this year...
No super tactics needed, just a plain 2-3-2-1-2 with wing backs coming up and a AM supplying the strikers.
Actually, staying a long time at a club is great because after the 8th season, my youth investment paid off.
I just got a regen GK, Serge Marty, 18 years old. First thing I know, he's called up to the French Senior National Squad while playing with my reserves... :D
I know it's bragging, but this game needs patience. It's even cooler once all known players get real old and appear as coaches.
I have Trezeguet (always gets fired after a year, but keeps being hired), Sebastien Frey, Thuram and Dacourt as current managers.

It's worth it. Just stick it out. You get to reap the rewards of picking some talented youth over old foggies.

I've never downloaded any tactics. Also, I still can't figure the with and without ball screens... Too much hassle...
With the kind of players I have, I think a 7-2-1 would still win it :D
Anyway, if you play 01/02, try France to get an hand. The league is easier than England and jobs are easier to get.

I'm thinking about buying that item... my question is... is $14 a good price for 03/04? And also, do you think I need the Asian box/booklet (reduces shipping charges if I don't have it sent)?

I think it is a good price for software that retails for more than double that. I bought CM4 on eBay but I found someone selling an english language version. The asian versions are most certainly illegal copies.

I've started new games, but I find myself buying the same players and using the same formations and tactics, so I usually go back to my Plymouth game.

10 seasons? Well that's the fun of it all. If I hadn't stayed with the same team for 15 seasons I wouldn't have been able to watch all those 18 year olds I bought bloom into talent worth £25m each.
Gives one an almost fatherly feel.
And as for the names - they are all real - sure, somewhere along the line names will have to be made up but towards the start all players are real.

Does anyone here know if Fulham move back into craven cottage in 03/04? Its been 2 seasons and still playing at dinky Loftus Road. And if you have ever tried you can not expand that stadium since you do not own it.
I actually was QPR manager for a decade and a half, dragging us up from division 2 and eventually reaching the dazzling heights of being the holders of every club cup it was possible for them to hold - simultaneously. The club was raking it in, players were happy and everything was hunky-dory.
They were nice enough in expanding the youth facilities but since apparently the crowds weren't big enough - they would not expand the ground.

Just won La Liga with Real Madrid. I know it isn't much of an achievement but it was my first season in charge and the only player i bought was Gerrard for 26.5m. Players were getting tired near the end of the season though so i'm gonna have to do some shopping for some rotation players.

Me too. One player that I always seem to buy cheaply or sign on a Bosman, regardless of the teams I've managed (Cardiff, Mainz, and Alaves thus far), is Sunday Oliseh. He's not the best defensive midfielder in the world, but provides about as much bang for the buck as you'll find. Solid ball-winner, good distribution, great leadership (he instantly becomes captain of any side) and 5 to 10 goals from free-kicks each year until 2009 or 2010.
IMO, for those struggling with the game, one of the keys to sound financial management of a non-major club is to spend your limited funds on good defensive midfielders and central defenders. In my experience, it is fairly easy to loan decent strikers and outside midfielders, so there's no real point in spending transfer funds on them. The exception to the rule is Anatoli Todorov. I bought him from Litex for $4 million and three years later he's already worth $56 million.

Yeah, that's QPR's problem.
Congratulations on winning it all... The best I could manage was back-to-back promotion to the Premiership (play-offs winners both year :D). But then, it all went south :( and I left as most the squad hated me for warning some players about bad performances.

What are your worst ever runs?
Mine is from my glorious Marseille game, I'd had left Newcastle after a struggle in the Premiership. The only club who wanted me was Rennes in the French D2.
They were sixth at the time with 10 games to go. I lifted the club to the last promotion place, but then calamity struck...
After 19 games out of 38... 0 Win , 5 draws, 14 loses with something like a minus 30 goal differential Ouch!!!
We lined up 12 losses in a row at one point :(
We did manage to turn it around and finished only 6 points out of the last non-relegated team due to good recruting.
Let's now say that losing two three games in a row doesn't worry much now...
