After playing 99/00 forever, I finally made the plunge (buh-bye Miami Fusion) and bought 03/04. I do have some questions though, as I begin my first campaign as manager of Tranmere...

1) From time-to-time I've read on sigames.com that there's a way for me to publicly praise or criticize my players; how do I do that?

2a) When viewing my coaches' comments in the Training screen, they tell me that a few of my players are not training as hard as they should. Is this because those players are slackers (do I need to warn them or fine them a weeks wages) or is my training regimen too tough? (I'm still using the default training regimens right now)

2b) When assigning coaches and physios to the different training regimens (First Team, Reserves, etc.) is there a benefit to assigning multiple coaches/physios to the same regimen? On the flip side, is there a detriment to having one coach assigned to multiple regimens?

3) I have several players that I'm interested in possibly purchasing in the future (my board won't let me buy until I get rid of $18k/wk of my $61k/wk payroll...tight-fisted bastards) so I decided to "Get Scout Report" on those players. Would I get a scout report on them quicker if I just left my scouts unassigned or if I assign my scouts to the countries that these players are playing their respective league matches at?

4) Is anyone else out there as anal as I am with regards to realism and playing in "fog of war" mode, where player attributes of obscure players are hidden, forcing me to assign a scout to watch my upcoming Div. 2 opponents to uncover the attribute ratings? :-)

5) Has anyone been able to get custom background pictures to appear? How do I do it?

I think that's enough questions for now. :-D I'm using 4.1.3 with the match stats fix.

right click on their name, or select them and click action, then use the release media story and you can then praise or criticize them.

i think its just something that happens, i wouldnt warn them for it. maybe you should try a new training schedule. here is a good one to download: http://www.throw-in.com/downloads/Files/Throw-in_Training_ Schedules_v1_0.zip

2b) When assigning coaches and physios to the different training regimens (First Team, Reserves, etc.) is there a benefit to assigning multiple coaches/physios to the same regimen? On the flip side, is there a detriment to having one coach assigned to multiple regimens?

just because it is simple i assign all coaches to every regimen and then just remove ones that dont belong (ie: only good at coaching keepers). i dont know if it is bad to have one coach on more than one group, but i know it is good to have more than 1 coach per group. more coaches and physios the better i think. just remember they should have a high tactical knowledge and high coaching rating, working with youngsters is good too.

hmm...i am not quite sure. my scouts usually dont find me any1 that good so i dont assign them, but every know and then i just go to quick search n manually assign a scout to scout an indivisual player.

4) Is anyone else out there as anal as I am with regards to realism and playing in "fog of war" mode, where player attributes of obscure players are hidden, forcing me to assign a scout to watch my upcoming Div. 2 opponents to uncover the attribute ratings? :-)

i think you have to hide the scouts, it makes it more rewarding when u find a good player. so ya i am with you.

5) Has anyone been able to get custom background pictures to appear? How do I do it?

i have downloaded and installed them but couldnt get them to work. this website has quite a few good packages. www.s-crew.co.uk

I do that, but Release Media Story is not an available option for me...is it because my club (Tranmere Rovers) is too insignificant to have any media pull?

Another question: How fast is play of CM0304 over the Internet? I have a cable modem -- I wonder if playing over the Internet with a fast computer as the game server would make the game faster for me than playing it on my ancient P3/450 with 128MB RAM...

You must wait for at least 5 Competitive matches before you can praise/criticize someone.

I am using the 4.1.3 (latest) patch for 03-04 and I was sacked from Fulham and had to wait half a season before getting a new job, now when I got the job, the games before I joined were disappeared (no stats, but there were scores). I joined Preston (then in division 1). I also had it NOT on full detail. Are these disappearing game stats because they were not on full detail or because of the bug in 4.1.3 (which I hadn't experianced and I thought I had fixed with the new .exe)? Appriciate any help.

thanks

I have a question about CM 02/03

Whenever World Cup Qualifying comes around, the top African teams don't participate, teams such as Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon and Senegal. They don't even get a playoff game to qualify for the group stage.

Anyone know whats going on with that?

Also, its annyoing they always put the 4 best Asian Teams in the same group, and all the other *#*#*#*#*#*# ones in the rest. Japan, South Korea, Iran, and China are always grouped together. Grr.

I am confused. I have trouble telling which is newer CM4 or CM03/04?

Could someone give me a quick synopsis of the series, and make suggestions?

I have read through the posts on this thread, and looked at sigames.com, but am unsure what to purchase.

For the past 7 years (+/-) Sigames has been producing the Championship Manager series. When they produce a new version it is labeled CM2 or CM3. However, when they produce an update before the new English season they call it by the year. So there was CM2 and them CM 98/99, I think. Similarily there was CM4 and now there is CM 03/04. If you are looking for the latest and greatest buy CM 03/04. It has all the latest code and player databases, updated since the release of CM4.

THis is the last CM that SIGames will work on I should point out. Next Fall will be CM5 or 04-05. Because EIDOS will bring-in a new company.

Does anyone know how co-ownership works in Italy? I have started a game with Roma yet I cannot offer co-ownership for a player.

just won the d2 with cardiff. got like 4.5 million in tv money, and the board has given me a massive transfer budget. almost 6 mil.

BUT, the highest wage they will allow is 19k. so, that transfer bill is almost worthless. and they refuse to raise it.

i didnt ask for this damn transfer budget, i was really only looking for frees. sometimes i wish that there was a "have an angry teacup-heaving conversation with the board" or a "jack sam hamman in the face" button.

19k (even in dollars) would be an awful lot for a first division club.

the only player i've got asking for less is a 16-year-old reserve striker.

edit: probably should have added i have wages set at 'per month'

A question for the more experienced…

You take a bad team and defy the odds by winning promotion in your first year. The next year, the board gives you very little money or room to improve and you get crushed the next year in a division you clearly don’t belong in. How do you avoid getting axed?

My story…

I’m working on my third try at CM4, first time I won Div. 1 with Nottm Forest in my first season, was expected to fight against relegation in the Prem. and then got fired in March when the team dropped into the bottom 3. I tried again with Barnet in the Conference with similar promotion then axed results.

I am currently playing with Cheltenham who have spent the vast majority of their history at, or below, Conference level, but had a good run in the late ‘90s which saw them promoted to Div. 2 at the end of the ’01-’02 season. So when you start with them in CM4, you have no transfer budget, a $1.4M(US) wage limit, a bunch of old, semi-talented players, an 80-1 shot at gaining promotion, and a board expectation to “fight bravely against relegation”. I’ve finished 3rd in the league but know that this squad will get crushed next year if it wins promotion to Div. 1. So, do I “tank” the playoff games and spend a couple more seasons in Div. 2 building a better squad or is there some method I can use to avoid getting axed when Div. 1 teams start wiping the floor with me next season?

Any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to ask a question about recieving job offers. I've been coaching a the top team in the mexican league for some time now. Ive won most every tournament that my team has been in, even winning the Intercontinental Cup (toyota Cup) twice on penalties. So, why cant i get a job at a club in europe? do i have to resign from my current job to be offered a new one? Its a little frustrating seeng as how i can have so much success in the game and when a job becomes available, i see some coach who's been fired from 5 different clubs get the job instead of me.

by the way, im currently in the 2007 season on CM4 with version 4.08 and have 2 divisions running in Mexico, Spain, England, and Italy. I also havent been able to get a national team job, although i can see that being more difficult to obtain. Any help would be appreciatied

You should be able to apply and take a new position while still managing your current club. I imagine you can't get a job in Europe because you have your nationality set to Mexican or something else non-European. You might need to take a low level club to begin with.

The talent level gap between the bottom half of Div. 1 and the top half of Div. 2 shouldn't be that large. You should have a good chance to avoid relegation, even on a tight budget. The best advice I can give you is get maximum production out of the loan system. Fish around the EPL clubs for promising youngsters and bring them in on full season loans. In my current game with Walsall, I was able to get promoted to the EPL in one season on a 95K transfer budget because I had great loan signings. Another idea I use is I try and buy the best players off the clubs that were just relegated to a lower division. Also, I found that speed kills in the lower divisions.

What do you currently use for a tactic?
