Super keeper cost me again. Playing as Le Harve Athletic Club, I got 13 shots off, 8 on target including a penalty on the backup PSG keeper and got beat 1-0. Cost me a chance to move into 2nd place.

Who plays MLS in Champ Manager? How do you find it? Harder than normal or easier?

Porto and I beat Man Utd at home (2-1) in the CL QF. But we lost away 1-0. No CL this year :(

But I won the championship!

2 seasons 5 prizes (league, UEFA Cup, European Super Cup, Portuguese Supercup and Portuguese Cup)

Not bad :D

It's harder I think, at least on 01/02. You can't afford big salaries, and only 4 foreigners. The international competitions you can enter, the Merconte Cup and Champions Cup, are played at the same time as the MLS playoffs. You can end up playing 2 or 3 games per week, against teams that are only playing once a week. And even if you do make it to the World Club Championship, I don't see how you'd stand a chance against the Real Madrid and Barcelona's of the world.

Also, most of the chairmen in MLS are very impatient.

The good thing is that the big European teams don't poach your good players from you, in my experience. I have played from scratch a couple times with DC United, and the first time I played I kept waiting for a Euro team to make an offer for Convey (who was incredible one of my games) and Quaranta. Never happened.

If you're after a good MLS soccer simulation (and A-League), US Soccer Manager should be out by the end of the summer.

By simulation it's got all of the rules implemented, waivers, allocations, etc. The current downloadable demo doesn't have that yet though.

How do you break this formation

---X-----X----
------X--------
---X--X--X----
X------------X
---X--X--X----

with the two defensive wingers making forward runs?

every team is playing this formation against me and i'm running minus-.500 with a team that was 13-3-1 before the winter break (i'm playing the Bundesliga)

You ask the ref to recount the outfiled players, cuz you're playing against 12. :p

My favorite formation is what I call the "3-5-2 Star"

I play two forwards, one attacking midfileder, two wings (that push up), two defensive mids (that push up), and three defenders bunched up in the back. I set the two outermost defenders to man-mark, with the middle defender and two d-mids to play zone defense. The AM is usually the playmaker, so I try to get him the ball to distribute either to the strikers or the wings.

I call it the "Star" because that's the pattern the mids make.

Try the "Christmas Tree"

I posted this a while back, supposibly the strategy is also on the CM strategy site.

Its a 3-2-2-2-1

Looks like this....

-----FW------
--AM----AM--
Wing-----Wing
--DM----DM--
D-----D-----D
-----GK------

You need one the best target forward that can finish, head and jump. In the 01/02 Cherno Samba became a star in this formation. Your AM's can be forwards as well. This formation does wonders for Dmids, I've got 5 right now that I rotate and all are national teamers (three are captians!). Wingers just need stamina, crossing and speed. I am able to get away with relatively weak defenders in this formation as well. My center back is great, the other two are average for the EPL.

I haven't bought 4 yet, but after reading this (http://www.sigames.com/news_view.php?act=2&id=681) I probably won't.

Hey Luan, are there any technical tricks I should know for fast-forwarding the game? I'm tried running it overnight (1 manager on holiday), but my system keeps locking up before I wake up, or something.

I didn't this time though. Just played the same save for two and a half years.

Actually I had in a previous version of CM3 used the holiday option to move forward to the late 2040's before taking on Wokingham. Admittedly I did enjoy that game for a while, but it was at the time too slow and after failing to get promotion from the Conference after three attempts (4th (after a very good second half to the season, 1st, and 1st), I moved on, signed most of my better players and quickly lost interest in the game. Found by actually playing I get used to where the clubs actually are, rather than just being randomly deposited somewhere. Teams such as Bolton/Forest/Liverpool/Chelsea have been so long gone from the top few divisions I actually get surprised to see one of them there (Chelsea have just been on a recent revival).

Also the loading times have been slowly increasing (now takes over three minutes), so I get kind of used to it. Not suddenly taking five times as long as normal. Actually I nearly gave this game up after 15 seasons thanks to loading times, but transferred it to my current PC when I got it, quicker to load.

If you are putting it on holiday, I'd suggest now actually not doing it for too long. Take control of a club without a manager initially (there should be one or two around in all versions), resign immediately and leave for long enough so todays players are largely off the picture. Having heard someone on the CM boards seeing Mark Hughes going on into his 70's as a player could mean you'd be in for a wait. Retire then and add a new manager to the game and start playing.
