When the media praises a player, especially a younger one, is it better to parise the player or play down the praise. I have a young defender who won player of the month and then the media said he was great. I then responded with "yes he is" or whatever. The next match he was crap and got a 5 rating. Any correlation?

This wont help much, but depends entirely on the player.

I just saw the rolling demo of the 2D match engine in CM4. I then had to go out and buy a new keyboard cos I drooled all over the old one and shorted it, mucho impressive!
Is it true its release has been knocked back to febuary?

We are planning on a february release - this hasn't been put back as we hadn't indicated a release date until very recently.

Here's my story:
Jaime Moreno came under fire in the press and so has Mark Watson a couple times. I defended them both. When I defended Moreno, the GM sent me a message saying he didn't think I should be defending Moreno's poor form. When I defended Watson, Watson sent me a message thanking me and saying he would repay me on the field. So of course Watson scores an OWN GOAL his first game back on the pitch!!!

Now, most recently, Ben Olsen came under fire from a former coach AND from the supporters club. I defended him and Olsen delivered a press release in which is gratitude to me was underlined.

I got sacked anyway... So I regenerated myself immediately, of course!!! :D

I guess my point is that you just don't know how the players will react, but I think there's something to what BrianJ says about building up their loyalty, etc...

I was once playing Lincoln City (I think) and managed to buy a striker who was way too good for us. He led the league in scoring his first season (even though I signed him 10 games in) and was well on his way to a second straight scoring title when I was asked if I agreed that he was a first-rate striker. I said something like "well, there's always room for improvement" and he immediately demanded to be transferred and the offers came rolling right in from all over. There was no way I could hold onto him. It turned out he was only staying out of loyalty, and when the loyalty wasn't returned unconditionally, he moved on. Probably the single stupidest thing I've ever done in CM.

Seriously?

Yes, seriously. I bought a new computer 4 months ago and there was an old screen chucked in for free as I didn't have enough money for a new one. This brilliant screen :D has only got a maximum screen resolution of 640 x 480 or it screws up! I'm already working on getting a new one though as I have some money now.

I will almost always build up praise for a player when he is lauded in the media, and only rarely will I comment when a player is trashed. It's the old adage -- praise in public and criticize in private.

I was in the Northern Irish league with Bangor FC (who I had renamed to "Air Force" in the game editor) and signed a 16 year old French striker named Gerard Isidore. By a total fluke (four strikers were injured) I had to use him in a match at 16 years old. He scored a goal in his debut, so I used him again, and he scored again.

By the time he was 23 (somehow, still playing for my team even though he was good enough for English First Division) he was scoring well over 30 goals every season and averaging over 8.00. On a monthly basis, he would get lauded by the media, and every time, I'd build up praise. Maybe that's why he was so loyal to a lowly Northern Irish team.

One thing I wish the game could include is a method for giving both positive and negative feedback to the team after a match. So many times I've had matches where the whole team plays totally flat, and the only way to chew them out is to go to each individual player and give an "Official Warning," which is quite harsh and would lead to some serious problems.

It would be great if, after a match, there was an instant feedback screen where you can either chew the whole team out in the locker room after a bad match or, alternately, praise them after a good one.

Similarly, since it's possible to discipline individual players for a variety of reasons, there should be a method for praising individual players (via either a pat on the back or an unexpected bonus) when they've been performing well.

Those are great ideas. I'm keen to praise in public as well, unless I'm screwing with Man Utd, then I wish they would let me type my own comments "Wes Brown ! We have stewards who are better defenders!"

I like the post game comment section and the bonus seems like a great idea.

You'll be glad to know that there are more pro-active media options in CM4, instead of having to wait and respond to news items you can now start your own ones up ...

I think that's a good start, but it would also be nice to be able to give immediate feedback to the team behind closed doors. If I want to tell my team that they're playing like pregnant sloths, I don't necessarily want the media to hear it.

I, too, would like to be able to give praise to someone doing well.

I think immediate verbal feedback to the team would be even better now that there's a graphic match engine we can see. It's awfully difficult to get a true feel for the flow of the game when only text messages are seen, but now that we can actually watch the game, it would be great to have the added ability to tell the team "we need to pass better," "our wings should do a better job of getting open," or "I've seen drunken amputees who could play better than you guys."

Granted, this type of instant feedback would be tricky to implement, and would probably be menu driven in the same way Player Discipline already is, but I think it could be done, and would be very effective.

You can also make promises to players away from the media .... eg.

Honest I'll give you first team football next season please be patient
If you don't improve soon you're out.

etc.

Will the new version also include the occasional media report that a player who is supposed to be injured is out golfing and visiting a disco on a game day? :D
