"Does anyone know a good, cheap defender who could play in the 1st division in England"
Danny Cullip (Brighton/England) is a very talented player who can normally cut it right up to the Premiership (although don't expect him to get into the England squad in a hurry).

Apart from that I suggest checking out youngsters at the big premiership clubs, quite often some of them will be released at the ned of each season and be quite suitable for the lower leagues (and free :D).

I'm looking around thinking about purchasing Championship Manager but I see two editions...
CM3 and CM-01/02. What is the difference?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

they are the same.

Does anyone know a good, cheap defender who could play in the 1st division in England. Right now I'm playing as Stoke in the 2nd division but if I get promoted I don't want to have to replace someone I just bought.

CM3 is the original game, each season after its release we've improved upon the CM3 engine and named the game after the soccer season it starts in.

So you will find the following versions available:

CM3
CM99-00
CM00-01
CM01-02

CM01-02 is the latest version and the one I would recommend getting.

try Wayne Thomas or James Aggrey ... they were pretty good until I went up to the Premiership.

Get your scouts to find one.

As for the version of CM, latest always is best. Although I do have to admit to missing out on the last one. Started my current save game in January 2001 as I recall (at least looking through SI forums reveals my previous save became corrupted - Sandona got to play themselves, and the team listed fourth in Serie B got relegated), and around the time 01/02 came out I decided to carry on with that as I was still enjoying it. Currently at the end of season #62.

For whatever reason I like playing with San Jose in the MLS. I think it's just because they have decent defense, but a deadly trio of attackers in Donovan, DeRo, and Cerritos. So I've started a season with them about 4 times now, but I've gotten completely different results when i play the first season. I've used the same lineup and such, just tweaked it a little bit, and for whatever reason one time I won 29 of the 32 games in the first season as well as a USOC, scoring like 4 goals a game. But this game, I'm in my first season and these poelple cannot score a goal for the life of them and I'm 1-1-6 right now.

I think I'm gonna restart again cause this just sucks. Mulrooney was one of my best players last time, and now he can't get above a 6 in form per game.

How much is the save file for CM? I think CM2 is like 60megs and that was 7 years ago.

It depends on how many seasons you've played, whether it is compressed or uncompressed, if it is max data or min data, and how many leagues you have chosen. I just started a game playing 11 leagues, max data, and saving compressed. Through one season the file is 106 MB and it will get larger through every season.

Thanks for the savegame info, I didn't like CM2 but I had to manually add Rushden and Diamonds and search/create all their players but they were too good and all left the squad.

I think I beat Watford in a cup though

Re: Save games:
===========
The size of save games increases during the first 6-8 seasons, after that it should even out to a more or less constant level.

Hi. In CM01/02, is there any way to have your coach and asst manager switch roles when the coaching roster is full? I tried and it says 'roster full'. Or do you need to cut one of them and hope you can rehire him again? Anyone ever been in this situation before? Thanks.

You can only have 1 Asst Manager and 5 coaches at once. You will have to release your Asst Manager(he most likely won't accept a new role as coach while he still is the asst man) then offer the coach you want to be asst manager the job of asst man. Now, if you want the asst manager to be a coach offer him the job of coach. He will now accept the job because he is unemployed. This works with players whose contracts are running who are asking for too much money. If there are no clubs interested in the player just let his contract run out and wait for the player to leave the club(or you could just release him). When he leaves the club offer him a contract, you will now see that his wage demands have dropped significantly.

Hey

Ive just got my computer back and I wondered if anyone had news concerning MLS in CM 02-03.

And, if its not too late, some awesome defenders are

Mikael Dorsin - Djurgarden (SWE) He's cheap and can do midfield also. He gets World Class.

Tiem Klompe - He's Dutch I think

Jukka Puurunen - A solid Finn

Christer Persson

Clint Hill - Tranmere I think

CM02-03 is called CM4 (in case you need to order it in the future ;) ).

The MLS will be as realistic as possible in CM4 and will contain:

* Data/Competition updates in accordance with all real world changes
* Proper Draft System
* Accurate MLS Contract system

In CMo1/02, I can not seem to purchase scouts! I am currently playing with Morecambe, originally from the English Conference, up to Division 3 in my third season (I went on a 67 game non-losing streak). I've been wanting to purchase scouts but they always turn down my offers when they are working for another team, even if they work for a crappy team, even if I make them an awesome offer. When I find unemployed personnel, the option to select "Scout" never appears! What gives?
