Why isn't Beckenbauer considered the best football player ever?

Well he is considered ONE of he greatest of all time. I would hazzard a guess and say he is in most peoples top 5 or 10. I guess it depends on what you look for in a footballer. Besides, when you get to Beckenbauer, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, and a few others, what's the point? You can have players polls, coaches polls, fan polls, journalist polls, and they will always look a little bit different at the top.

1. Because he was a sweeper / def midfielder, not striker/of midfielder. That takes him a bit out of focus for some people.

2. Pelé - or not being Brasilian at the right time. So he has 1 WC, 1 WC runners-up, 1 WC third instead of Pelé's 3 WC. Beckenbauer for sure would have played in the same teams as Pelé did and would have gotten the same 3 WC, if he was a brasilian. Otherwise, Pele was the younggun but not the starplayer in ´58, injured in ´62, but only 1 time teamleader in ´70, Beckenbauer was the younggun in ´66, but 2 time teamleader in ´70 and 74.


For me Pelé is the undisputed best all-time football PLAYER, for his 3 WC, for his entertaining skils and his goals, followed by Beckenbauer, for his silverware, his strategic thinking, his leadership and of course for his technical skils too.

But Beckenbauer is in my opinion the greatest FOOTBALLER (see the difference I make to Football PLAYER), because of his success, inovations, influence and merits in now 40 years in worldclass football as player, as coach, as a functionary.

Beckenbauer is the best to have played the game. Pele was "entertaining" and he won those WC's because he was Brasilien, He didn't single-handedly carry the team. Beckenbauer was not only the reason why Bayern Munchen becamse a superpower in the early 70's but also the German national team, he was a brilliant tactitian and leader. Being a defender he doesn't get much credit as strikers but he did score an unbelievable amount of goals in his career and lots and lots of beauties in the mix. Beckenbauer still continues to affect football in Germany and the rest of the World in the most positive aspects. Him and Pele are also very good friends. :D

Wow. I guess people here might be surprised if I pointed out how well-rounded Pelé was as a footballer? Good tackler, great positioning, amazing dribbling, passing and shooting. He had EVERY soccer skill including goalkeeping. Pelé wasn't just a flashy Brazilian, he was (is) the greatest soccer mind ever.

Pele, Maradona, Puskas, Cruyff, Di Stefano, Best, etc. were all better players than Der Kaiser. But Beckenbauer was innovative and a real competitor. He is probably one of the smartest players in the history of the game.

Smarter than all those you mentioned above, especially smarter than Maradonna. If anyone ever came close to Franz or Pele I think it'd be Cruyff, I personally think he's better than Maradonna.

Well, he won a World Cup as a player for Germany. he managed a German team that won a World Cup. He managed a campaign that brought the World Cup Finals back to Germany. That is something.
