Why would either be labeled crazy?

they are more sane than most of us. Perez turned Real madrid into a brand name. He did win two CL titles under his leadership. Roman turned Chelsea into a mega club. If I have his money, I would spend it liked he does too.

I meant more of who is craziest because of the way they buy players...

If you mean, because of the players they buy, I'll give you a little hint:

I'm pretty sure in 2 years Abramovich spent more money on players than Perez did since he became the president.

I read in the New York Sun that Abramovich made 2
billion dollars last year through his oil co., so his invest-
ments in Chelsea look to be a drop in the bucket . . .
I would add that Abramovich is a shrewd buyer--he first
got Mourinho as coach (9 million/ yr) and then Mourinho
advised him to buy a number of clever players. You have
to say, in fact, that he's gotten great value out of his
purchases, with players like Carvalho, Ferreira, and Cech,
while Perez has been making some telling mistakes. Buying
Woodgate? Hmm . . .
BTW, I don't think Abramovich is crazy. And if you mean
who's the bigger spender you can look at the trade news
can't you?

Abromavich has been in charge off some awful and outlandish buy's but what does he care he has more money down the back of the sofa than you or I could dream off.

Obviously Perez has been in charge longer, but I'd be careful saying that Abramovich has made great purchases while Perez has not. Perez has 2 CLs and 3 La Ligas, I believe, while Abramovich has won nothing so far (although the EPL is all but wrapped up). Both have made mistakes (not buying a DMid and fullback sooner for Perez; paying a lot for Crespo, Veron, and perhaps Kezman and Drogba...) but both are going to continue to compete for, and win, the league and the CL every year.

I couldn't disagree more; he does care, and that is
why he's made--on the whole--very smart purchases that
have made Chelsea a winning side.
What do you mean by awful? Don't tell me you think that
Drogba can't play?

I'm not keen on this "both" business, for I think the two have
different policies. Specifically, Perez's "galactico" policy is one
that is based on the marketing idea that buying the biggest stars
will lead to the greatest number of fans and merchandise sold
and trophies won, but in practice it is a very unhealthy policy,
because you can't have a team of huge individual egos; not
in a team sport like soccer, anyway.
Chelsea, with no real super-star (though Robben will become
one), look much smarter to me.

16m on Muto
16m on Crespo
26m on Drogba
20m on Carvallo
15m on Veron
11m on Parker
13m on Ferreira
9m on Tiago
Are all purchases way over the odds also Muto, Veron and perhaps Crespo were all unmitigated disasters.

I'm hearing some true Puritan self-righteousness here. What do
you mean by calling Carvalho and Ferreira and Drogba bad purchases?
These are all fine players. The only "disaster" you have there is
Mutu, who's behaved badly. But Chelsea look to make money on
selling Crespo, while Tiago is a respectable player. Valeron and
Parker, well, not the best purchases, but on balance Chelsea are
doing a lot right.
