Ok, folks, since I can't get a forum specifically for Old Firm Rivalries, I'm going to try this. Just like World Rivalries and the other rivalries forums, this will not be moderated quite as stringently, but serious personal attacks are still verboten.
Other than that, have at 'em.

Quick question for either Rangers or Celtic fans. In your opinion why does your club have so many supporters?

Huge influx of Catholics in the west of Scotland, the idea of a Catholic club stolen from Hibs..... always continued to attract Catholics and increase as our normal fan base increased with mixed marriges....my uncle's and neighbours gave me my love of Celtic....that's very quickly, i can give a more detailed answer if requested.

I think beacause Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland, they will obviously have more fans, and have been the domenent clubs, so some fans might just be glory hunting.

Why is the Hun not giveing Atilla a game?

Attila is a decent player, but he is not dynamic enough. There is not enough time for him to achieve peak fitness and settle into the squad. Plus his position has been adequately filled. It looks like he will be a gamble that didn't pay off.

Nice try, but we both well know that the *majority* of Old Firm fans live outside Glasgow. I would wager that even out of those who attend matches, it'll be a 50/50 split between weegies and outsiders.

I would think it would be close in deciding whether Glasgow or outside Glasgow contributes greater number of supporters attending Celtic park, I'd just go for more Glaswegians. I know we have a large support over from Ireland around 5 to 7K I heard. I know that a lot of these supporters see Celtic as an Irish club, in Scotland.

I'll offer a few explainations of what I think about why people support one of the OF. Feel free to disagree :p
1)History - This first explaination accounts for a big part of the support. Usually passed on through a Father or someone in the family you support rangers or Celtic fully embrassing their history. The obvious downside to this is that it often leads to sectarianism (give it another name if you want, i'm not debating what it's called). This is sometimes just banter and left at the football, that's not too harmful in itself but not ideal as it adds to its more sinister side. This is when people take things too far, leading to violence and sometimes killings. Poeple get caught up in this history, it gives them something to belong to and for a large preportion of Scotland's population it gives many of the not very pleasant (putting it politely) people in Scotland something to attach themselves to.
2)Gloryhunting/following the crowd - I'll just lump these 2 in together. The gloryhunters are the ones who choose Rangers or Celtic without family influence, or the ones who change teams regularly. This is why there is many celtic fans on show in my area these days and why there were next to none during the nine-in-a-row in the 90s. The crowd following one comes to to human nature in many people. No matter how many people claim to be rebels if they are all doing the same thing it is hardly rebeling. People often like to belong to the biggest group, they are far too insecure to do otherwise.
3)My Daddy supported them so I will too - This one is particularly understandable if you are taken along to games from an early age, less understanable if your dad isn't really into football but says he supports Rangers/Celtic anyway. That's just following your father into the second group. Sorry for not saying Mothers, but that is a much more rare case.
4)An honest choice - This accounts for about 0.01% of the support. Some just make an honest choice at an early age not knowing anything about the team and stick with it.

I guess my local team should be St Mirren considering I grew up in Inchinnan. But I was taken to Ibrox when I was 5 by my father and uncle and was hooked from that moment onwards. Family influence really. Although considering they are all from Arran they should all have been Killie fans!

I was born in Govan and I still live within walking distance from Ibrox. Therefore I'm a follower of my local team.
