Nice work as usual, but what's with the one game for Cork? I'm assuming he made a guest appearance or something like that, but do you have more info?

I don't know much about that Cork episode. The game was held on 23 April 1978 vs. Shamrock Rovers (2-6) with Seeler scoring both goals at the age of 41. Information on this is very scarce, I googled and found this bit, but unfortunately it is in Swedish (?):

Seeler gjorde 1978 ett kort inhopp i fotbollen då han spelade en match för irländska Cork City. Seeler trodde att det handlade om en vänskapsmatch men fick senare veta att det faktiskt var en ligamatch. Seeler har alltså meriten 1 match i den irländska ligan. Seeler gjorde dessutom Corks båda mål i 2-6-förlusten.

If anybody understands this language, I would appreciate a translation. What I grasp from this text is that somehow his appearance in that match is counted as an official league match. Sort of.

I never knew that. I'll PM a couple of the Cork lads on the boards and see if they know anything about it.

Here's the goal (http://www.geocities.com/castmind/seeler.html) that broke England's heart.

The most influentual player in Hamburg's history.

It's a pity that he didn't play in any of Germany's World Cup wins, having a reputation for being one of Germany's greatest players and he doesn't play in one of FRG's winning teams.

Excellent idea. Let's see if anybody of the Cork lads knows about this episode.

Ain’t it sweet?

Indeed. He arrived only months after Germany’s first ever win of a trophy in 1954 and left two years before they would win their next trophy in 1972. But he’s not bitter about that at all. Easy going chap. Germany’s best centre forward until Gerd Müller came along.
