Another excellent example of just how dramatic promotion and relegation can be. This club was once massive, and still holds the distinction of being the only English club to have more European than domestic trophies. Right up to last season they were promotion contenders, and this season they had a brief resurgence as they celebrated the legendary coach who brought them to glory.

We do have a promotion/relegation system in the US. It's just higher stakes. Ask soccer fans in Miami and Tampa. If you suck, you cease to exist.

He's from my hometown paper... and he's ever the douchebag... so I felt compelled to respond to him
Mr. Lippper,
I grew up in Richmond and the Times Dispatch was always around our home.
I remember as a boy, my parents would read your columns and yell at the paper - as if you might somehow hear their angry cries - calling you "an idiot" and denouncing your thinly veiled pro-Hokie and anti-Wahoo agenda.
I didn't share their scorn for you as I saw you as your typical crumudgeon-y sports columnist... there's one at every paper.
But today, Mr Lipper, I was on-line (I read the Times Dispatch on-line from my house in California) and read your column on soccer in the US and began screaming, "What an idiot!" at my laptop. Could you hear me? The neigbors did.
Yes, fans attending soccer matches world-wide can be idiots... but americans are just as capable of behaving like idiots at our respective sporting events. From rioting frat guys in Maryland to a father and son bonding moment with a third base coach in Chicago to a shower of beer bottles at an NFL game in Cleveland to a major brawl in the stands in Detroit... I could go on.
I understand that you were trying to be funny. Trying to find a clever way to say, "Hey why is soccer in the US still stuggling?"
But your arguments are tired and are becoming less and less valid. There is a growing number, albeit slowly, of passionate soccer supporters in this country. This is a tightly-knit group and one that is very loyal in a way that you might liken to early NASCAR supporters (something your readers should understand).
True, american soccer matches tend not to be as passionate as a soccer match overseas, but what US sporting event is? Maybe NFL football- maybe.
Do me a favor, watch ESPN2 tonight (sat april 23) at 10pm and you will see a beautiful soccer stadium in Los Angeles filled to capacity of 27,000+ as two inter-city rivals, the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA square off for the first time (look for me - I'll be there. I'm the good looking one.) Tell me if you don't see some passion, some intensity, some vitriol. Tell me if you think the sport still doesn't "resonate."
And by the way- if I read another lame soccer-bashing column from you it will be official, my entire family will hate you. :)
All the best

Rumors of a move, but not for Quakes-San Jose Mercury News (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/soccer/11470513.htm)
The Earthquakes' operator, the Anschutz Entertainment Group, has backed off claims it made last season that the San Jose club could be moved to San Antonio. An assistant to AEG's chief operating officer, Scott Blackmun, said Friday that the developments in San Antonio have "no relation'' to the Earthquakes.
Soccer Silicon Valley website (http://www.soccersiliconvalley.com/)
SSV, AEG on San Antonio:
No Impact on Quakes
(April 15) We're sure a lot of hearts skipped a beat with the announcement that MLS has signed an agreement with the City of San Antonio (http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20050414&content_id=26672&vkey=pr_mls&fext=.jsp), Texas for an MLS team "that could begin play in the city as early as the 2006 regular season." In light of this announcement, we thought we should make one of our own: Progress continues on both finding an investor for the Earthquakes and in our work with local municipalities towards a new stadium. We have spoken with AEG and to our knowledge, the San Antonio announcement has no bearing on the future of the Quakes.
Interesting scoop by Soccer Silicon Valley, just over a week before the San Jose Mercury News article.
I really do hope that the Wizards stay put in Kansas City as the Earthquakes will in San Jose, and that San Antonio gets an MLS expansion team instead.

The P&C have always supported the Battery but dont really carry too much on MLS unfortunately.

Hope he didn't tune in at 10 pm and see what a great respect MLS has with the guys at ESPN. Wonder if that would happen to an NFLE game?

OUCH Bro...Dam we (The Miami Fusion) didn't suck as a team it was just that nobody supported the side but a few of us on a consistent basis and we had some bad ownership.
Please don't forget that if not for Troy Dayak's late header we would have been in the MLS CUP.
