Three-month ban for Barthez Friday 22 April, 2005

France ‘keeper Fabien Barthez was suspended from playing for three months by the French Football Federation (FFF) for spitting on a referee during a friendly match in February.

The disciplinary tribunal of the FFF, which heard the case on Thursday, found the World Cup winning ‘keeper guilty of spitting on the referee, Mr. Abdelah El-Achiri, after a fight had erupted during Marseille’s friendly match against WAC Casablanca in Morocco on February 12.

The three-month ban, with another three months suspended sentence, takes affect from Monday April 25 until July 25 and means Barthez will miss the final four games of the Ligue 1 season, but will be free to play against Nantes this Saturday.

The ban also means Barthez will be free to play in Les Bleus next World Cup qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and the Republic of Ireland on September 3 and 7, respectively.

Marseille have ten days to lodge an appeal against the tribunal’s findings.

Why bother with a 3 month ban so close to the summer?

Yeah, it is stupid. It should be a 12 match Ligue 1 match ban or something...

He will miss a few games.

Everyone is reporting that he could well retire after this incident.

Regardless of jhow crap that ref was (he was awful), you can't spit or attack an official. The ban was justified if not stupid by the FFF for taking this long to ban him. He did this months ago.

Bowyer is in the stand after just a few games after the Villa game.

Come on, French authorities, get a move on!

This is sickening  .

The official rule says six months ban at least. An amateur, for the same offense, would take a full season ban. Barthez, being a "star", takes a mock ban (end of season, no important game with France). Justice is nowhere to be seen.

I'm really angry to see those millionaires playing terrible soccer (2002, 2004, 2006 Qualifs), showing no respect for their sport, talking like insane show-biz divas (Barthez talks like Maria Carey), and, whatever happens, taking absolutely no responsability for this.

Shame, shame, shame on french federation. FFF knows only one rule, one regulation: money.

Being a french soccer fan today ? I feel an urge to hide my head under a bag. We're going lower and lower every day. What will be the next humiliation ? Where the descent will stop ? :(

Diouf claims conspiracy theory Saturday 23 April, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marseille President Pape Diouf suggested there is a conspiracy against Fabien Barthez after the French Football Federation (FFF) claimed the ‘keeper’s punishment was too lenient.

Barthez was handed a three-month suspension for spitting on a referee but the ban could now be increased after the FFF lodged an appeal.

“I'm very surprised to hear that the Federation is appealing against a decision made by one of its own committees,” said Diouf.

“I’ve got the impression that they want to show prejudice against Marseille and that they want to chase Fabien Barthez out of the game.”

The FFF’s disciplinary commission announced their decision on Friday afternoon, but just hours later the principal body released a statement saying that the punishment was not satisfactory.

The three-month ban, which includes a further three-month suspended sentence, runs over the summer, meaning that Barthez would miss just four club games and no competitive internationals.

“I should point out that this commission made its decision using all the evidence available,” Diouf continued.

“These men, who distanced themselves from the media frenzy, were in the best position to make a fair judgement.

“They haven’t made this decision to try to please the people, they’ve made it based on the facts available,” added the Marseille chief.

The minimum ban for spitting on a referee during a game is six months, the rules stipulate.

The FFF stated early on Friday evening: “The Federation finds an obvious disparity between this decision and the guidelines.”

Barthez is set to play for Marseille in tonight’s Ligue 1 clash against Nantes, with the ban due to start on Monday.

Salut !!

I'm not overreacting. This affair, as Marsiglia29 showed, is frontpage in all the press. Everyone thinks it's an outrage, both for our country and for the sport itself : justice should be the same, whatever money the guy wins. And, I repeat, the OFFICIAL RULE says : 6 months. The Federation DOESN'T EVEN RESPECT IT'S OWN RULES.

What next ? Famous players will have the right to score with handballs ? Superstars will have the right to tackle rough and break "lesser players" legs ? Offsides will be called, but only against the "underlings" ? Will the federation create different sets of rules, according to the team budget or the player's fame ?

When a sport federation DOESN'T EVEN RESPECT IT'S OWN RULES (yes, I'm repeating myself, but it's the keypoint), you can feel nothing but nausea and shame. We have hundreds of thousands kids in this country playing soccer in children and teens leagues, the federation should give them a positive model, and not : "when you're rich enough to get away with it, spitting on people is cool".

However, don't be affraid for my own sanity (well, to some extent :) ), soccer is only my second sport of choice, after rugby. XV de France players know that, when you wear the blue jersey, you represent a nation, and not only your bank account.

Wasn't it once the "manly" thing to do in Europe back in the day? "You disgrace me, *SPIT*, then maybe a slap in the face.
3 months for the spit since he didn't slap the guy. If he would have done that, then 6 months is good. ;+)

I think 3 months is fine. I think the fact that the reply shows he spat downwards towards the ground but hit the ref, plus the fact that Barthez has not admitted to it or apologized for it, 3 months is good. We don't know exactly what he pleded. Maybe he was showing his discuss by spitting towards the ground and "accidentally" hit the ref.

Barthez is needed in my opinion to get France to WC06. He played excellent in WC98, E00, WC02, E04. He has continued to play excellent in the qualifyers as well. I know we have 2 very capable keepers in Coupet and Frey but Bathez is and has been on a different level of playing.

Don't listen to the media. They are not out for the common good anymore. They are out to make money only at anyone's cost and reputation.

I also think the 3 month ban is sufficient.

Especially given the circumstances. The toxic environment the REF CREATED. The entire context was understandable.

I am none too happy w/ the FFF appealing. So what happens next time the Disciplinary committee gives a judgement? As far as the FFF are concerned, if they agree with it THEN it stands.

Plus, they took TWO months (well, a month and a half, and Barthex asked for the 2 week delay) to get around to it??

Let me also point out a qoute from the Ref: "he spit in my face" ... NO! Barthez did not.
And it was proven.

barthez also has a clean record.

The Disciplinary Committee KNOW what happened there. They are the ones with the facts, the opinions and the entire context of the match. Not Escalettes!

I also think we desperatly need Barthez for the WC qualifiers and tournament. It would not be arguable to say he is the only one getting us ANY points from the Qualifiers so far. How many times he's saved us.. wouldn't it be in the FFF's interest to keep him just for a selfish stake alone? To make sure Les Bleus get to the WC?

I think if Simonet was still in charge this mess of the outcome never would have happened!

Oh, on a plus side, yesterday's comments by Domenech about Fab's situation. It was nice to see Domenech finally stick up for one of his players.

When he's spoken about Henry before, he would stick up for him, then be very ambigious and dismissive in the next sentence.

Why are french players given special treatment. david gets minimum suspension and fabian gets a suspension but now it will be reconsidered because of the fff. stupid, stupid , stupid. Why are french players and so many french people so anti-simi. Even when it comes to soccer.
