Hey all -

I've been to Highbury before, but never in one of the pubs. A bunch of friends and I are headed there in November for a match and are wondering what the best pubs are...ones that serve food.

And, when is it best to arrive on a matchday !

SO: what's your favorite pub in the area, why, and where is it located !!

Thanks,
Steve

If you are visiting pubs then you must call in at "The Gunners". In Blackstock Road, a goal kick from the stadium. On a Saturday opening times are at 11am and I wouldn't leave it much past then to get in. It's probably the busiest and it's worth a visit if only to see all the "memorabilia" on the walls. I'm not sure about food as I have never eaten there, and they probably won't do much (if any) on match days anyway.
If you want the "biggest and best" fish and chips in London then try "The Arsenal Fish Bar" about 200 yards up the road from "The Gunners" and almost opposite another pub, "The Bank of Friendship" which is very popular also. On sunny days they have a beer garden at the back, and this pub was featured in "Fever Pitch". The part where he discusses "having the baby" and before Arsenal beat Norwich 5 - 0.
There is also "The White House", (yes, referring to one and the same), about half a mile from "The Fish Bar" and "The Bank" walking along the road opposite "The Bank", turning right and on the corner. Another popular place, and then my regular, "The Moray Arms", in Durham Road, which is about a 10 minute walk from Finsbury Park train station, off of Seven Sisters Road. A small place, more for regulars, and "match day regulars" again with Arsenal "memorabilia" on the walls, particularly back in the '89 winning season.
Other than that there is always Upper Street in Islington which is very trendy and lots of bars and restaurants, not particularly "Match day stuff" but more for your Friday/Saturday night out atmosphere. All manner of cuisines served there, and good too.
That's a quick "run down". Hope it helps.

Jeff, I've been reading in "The Gooner" about how a lot of the regulars are calling off their regular trips to The Gunners because the owner won't let them sing and is generally taking the piss? I didn't notice anything odd when I was there in Feb. but I don't exactly stop by every week. Have you heard any grumblings?

To be honest, I haven't been in there for some while.
It's more to do with not being able to get a drink quick enough due to everyone else being in there!
Hence me going to the "Moray Arms" or the "White House". I tend to go in there not on a match day, or get a beer from the off-licence and stand outside and drink it. I'll check it out on the next game.
