View Full Version : Why did Peru not qualify to the 1974 FIFA World Cup?

Being qualified to 3 out of 4 World Cups from 1970 to 1982, the question is why did Peru not qualify to Germany '74? Peru had the base, the players, the spirit. WTF happened? Was it not the same team from '70? bad coach? bad strategy/tactics? bad luck? I am gonna have to ask some old-schools and see what they tell me.

From what I've heard from old-schoolers, in 1974 both Sotil and Cubillas were in their prime, Sotil especially was on fire and we had an awesome team. Probably better than the 1978 one.
We struggled a bit through the qualifying games and had to go to a playoff with Chile played in Montevideo. Our Uruguayan coach Hector Scarone supposedly had a riff with Sotil and either didn't start him or play him at all and we lost 2-1.
That WC should have been the coming out party for el Cholo and his famous duo with Cubillas. DAMNIT!!

I just got told that it was Cubillas and not Sotil who got benched earlier by scarone because dumbass scarone wanted to save him for the second leg when Peru should've finished Chile with a lot more goals in the first leg. We'll have to confirm. But it's clear that it was the coach's fault!!! fuking scarone!! Can you imagine what that team would've done at Germany? Peru was at the top of its game in 1974. That sucks. It would've been another great run by the blanquirroja in the WC. I knew Chile couldn't have beat us just like that.

Worst was not having a goalie ... an HH Ballesteros had nationalized Peruvian already ... only for the military junta not to allow him to play for Peru.
We lost for having a lousy goalie ... kinda like in 1970.
Realize that in 78 and 82 we had Quiroga, and now Ibanez. In 1975, when we won the Copa America, Sartor was the goalie.

My dad used to complain how Cubillas' attitude had changed since he moved to Oporto ... he would just jump and take his feet away on each divided ball.
Munante was a given for the same reason.

PS: I watched the 2-0 win in Lima ... my 1st ever time to Oriente, as we couldn't find tickets for Occidente ... needless to say, El Nacional was packed to the max.

Yeah I always heard Cubillas being criticized for being a mar!con when playing. Supposedly, Sotil would get hacked even worse and keep playing.
As much as we want to fault Scarone for not putting the best team out there, I think we should have been able to beat Chile regardless, the team was that good. Guess we underachieved. AGAIN

Was that Hector Bailetti, who played for Boca Juniors in the early 70's? It has to be. I had forgotten about him. This brings me back memories of going to La Bombonera as a kid. I know, I'm getting old. I just don't realize it.
Bailetti was one hell of a player. A very skillful forward.

Hehe. I still feel young. :D
Bailetti was at Boca probably one or two years, with players like Potente, Trobbiani, Ferrero. It wasn't a typical Boca team. They played very attractive football, scored lots of goals, but lacked a bit of the 'garra' the toughness which characterizes Boca. They were fun to watch, but they didn't win any titles. When Toto Lorenzo came, he changed the whole team, and I think that is when Bailetti went back to Peru.
But yes, to get back on point, Peru had nice players in the 70's. Too bad they didn't make it to Germany, because they would have brought some brazilian style 'jogo bonito' and would have been an exciting addition to the World Cup.
