I could care less if Les Gones pick Morientes up. I see pros and cons to it.
Pro's - Good striker alongside Wiltord, and a replacement for Govou
Con's - Take away from Bergognoux, Ben Arfa and Nilmar who are fighting for starts.

"At Milan there is Shevchenko, Ronaldo at Madrid and Drogba at Chelsea. We don't have that kind of striker.
This is true but the problem is that if Lyon had a player like one of those guys there would always be speculation in the media that he would someday leave to join one of those teams mentioned above. Because the French league is not looked upon too highly by the media, players on teams like Lyon would always be rumored to go to one of those other big teams. Lyon can not win. They sign a big striker that they need, he performs very well, and then the rumors start about other teams being interested and more often than not the player will leave. Maybe its better they dont have one of the strikers mentioned above so they can hold on to their players longer.

I think the club would be more respected and feared if they get star players like Morientes in there.
Lyon play very well but it seems like they are lacking the psychological edge to take it to the next level in Europe.
Of course, better refereeing would help too....

Liverpool will have Cisse, Morientes and Baros next year. One of them has to go because they will not want to sit on the bench. Maybe Lyon can get Baros. I dont think they'd get rid of Morientes because they just got him cheap for 6 million. There's also a crazy rumor out there that David Trezeguet wants to come to Lyon.

Here is a guy who Lyon are definately interested in. Lens are try to beat Lyon and PSG to the punch to sign him. He's also linked with bottom feeding EPL clubs. He might be a good signing but I have a feeling Aulas is looking for a bigger name.

Baros will go to Valencia, so Morientes will stay at Liverpool.
Another rumour: if Pires doesn't sign again at Arsenal, he's be on his road to Lyon to join his friend Wiltord and replace Govou.

chances are that Cisse doesn't recover to his old self again, then Morientes and Baros will stay, and he has to go.

Benitez has said he would welcome Owen's return, so I am pretty sure that Morientes is gone.
Cisse cost 14 million euros, so I doubt that they would find a team to give them at least equal value.
Baros however is out of contract after this season I believe, not sure.

Liverpool only paid 6 million for Morientes, Lyon was willing to pay 10 million for him. Morientes said he wouldnt play for another French team other than Monaco but players always change their minds as we know. I dont think Pires would be a good signing for Lyon he is 33 and would take playing time from young midfielders like Clement, Benafra and Benzema who deserve a shot. He should retire at Arsenal.

i'm sure morientes is on the short list to replace govou (if he leaves*) as well as baros and dindane.
there are lots of youngsters who want spots, but for OL to bring them along right, there have to be experienced players to be examples for them. also, when you play in 3 or 4 competitions at once, there are plenty of matches for everyone.
morientes does have ASM in his heart, but if he decided to play for OL he'd bring that same fire, and that's one thing OL looks for in a player. and that's why i don't think pires is really under consideration.
as for cissé, i don't think liverpool is going to give up on a 14M€ player who hasn't had a chance to show what he's made of yet. and he's made of something special. i saw plenty of both him and drogba in 2003-4, and believe me, liverpool got a bargain and chelsea got taken to the cleaners.
*it seems obvious, but aulas says 15M€ now, and i don't know if anyone will pay that. in any case, the more sidney sees which other clubs want him and how much they'll pay him, he might decide to stay.

and anybody know about the status of czech players for european status? because the only non EU players that OL will sign are brazilian.

Is that a rule that the club has that they wont sign any non French Europeans ???
guignol
29 Apr 2005, 10:56 AM
no, i mean NON-europeans. they have 4 brazilians already, and that fills up the quota. players from all european union countries (and african countries by special agreement) are just like french players, but i'm not sure if czech players have this status yet.
the policy at OL for some time seems to have a maximum of brazilians (4). they have a great scouting system there.

Well I kinda like the fact that the only Europeans they have on the team are Frenchmen. The whole team is made up entirely of Frenchmen, Africans, and Brazilians. No South Americans on the team other than Brazilians and no Europeans on the team other than Frenchmen. I wonder if this is just a coinsidence or some kind of policy they have.

If Lyon had a world-class striker, they would win every Ligue 1 match 3-0.
