God I missed Derek Rae and Tommy Smythe. Those two guys were horrible. Hopefully the dynamic duo will return today for the Liverpool/Juve game. :)

Joe Tolleson and Adrian Healy were bloody terrible. Drogba was injured and taken off on a stretcher no less, and they didn't comment on the foul or his injury. Some time went by and they still didn't mention Drogba being on the sideline (would he be subbed? would he try and walk it off? who would come on in his place?). He came back onto the pitch after recovering and still nothing! We only realized this after the camermen focused in on him.

Rae is great (although probably not as good as Martin Tyler) and Smyth is at least entertaining.

Derek Rae is good, but Smyth's voice sounds like someone who just got neutered. Yes, at least he is entertaining though. "He should have lashed that free kick......into the back o' the net!!!"

Smyth is "entertaining," but not in a good way. I like Derek Rae, but I prefer Tolleson and Healy.

I rather like Tolleson, too.

Tommy Smyth always says "into the back of the old onion bag!" But still, he's one of the most annoying announcers and very biased...

I've read this accusation often on here, but no one specifies who he favors and who he's against.

The only time that I could detect any bias from Smyth was during last year's QF second leg between Arsenal and Chelsea. He was highly critical of Arsenal's diving, but that was something that would be obvious to anyone, whether you dislike Arsenal or not. I'm sure the Arse fans would differ, though.

Yeah this game was in Europe, so they had a reason for not sending announcers, but cases like these are why it's always good to have an announcing crew at the stadium.

Have someone on the field send word up to the booth and then they comment about the injury over the air.

I would rather listen to the Spanish or Portuguese commentators than Healy and Tolleson - boring, too low and monotone.

The games are broadcast simultaneously in English, Spanish and Portugese to ESPN International via satellite all over the world. ESPN2 just picks up that feed for two and a half hours. It's really because of the three language thing (and most everybody gets Spanish on ESPN International-- the ads and a lot of the graphics are in Spanish) that there aren't commentators on site. Plus I bet there probably isn't enough space for them in the boxes at the stadia.
