Well it looks like Tiger's going to be released in 17 days. Apple's got it officially up on their site.

I want to upgrade, but don't feel like spending $129 to do it.

There are rumblings in the Mac community that Tiger is more of a fix than an upgrade; "Spotlight" search tool seems to replace earlier "Sherlock" search engine that was missing on Jaguar and Panther versions, and "Dashboard" Widgets utility seems to be just an overhaul of Apple Tools available in other varieties in new graphical interface, and claimed Safari Upgrade should be free, not part of $129.00 fee! New "Automator" tool was a utility as old as OS 9.0... Will 'Tiger' actually do anything new seems to be a valid question... the Tech Specs posted for Tiger claim that it needs at least "3GB of available hard disk space" so that's a bump up from Panther and Jaguar and still a sizable amount of hard drive real estate just for the OS!!! I bet folks wait a bit before running out and getting Tiger as they did Jaguar!

FWIW, you can get it for $95 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002G71T0/002-1567152-7348029

I'm sticking with Panther for now, at least until I get myself a new Mac. As long as they keep releasing updates, I got no probs.

Being a relative newbie to Macs, I wonder how updates will work for legacy releases? That is, will I still be able to use Software Update on 10.3.x? Panther is up to, what, 10.3.8 right now? So will they only release one more update and then try to push people towards Tiger?

I like the Google Desktop-style continuous indexing that Spotlight uses, and Dashboard looks cool, but I'll wait to see how it works in real life.

IIRC, the last Jaguar update (10.2.8) was back in 2003, before Panther was released. They did release security fixes for 10.2.8 as late as November 2004.

So my guess is that after 10.3.9, there probably won't be any version updates, but you can still install security updates through Software Update.

As a user since OS X beta. I can say every release has offered increased speed and performance of the OS on my various machines. I'll be buying it for sure, I've yet to feel disappointed by Apple. :)

Completely minor issue, but Rendezvous is now Bonjour (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/). Lame, but I understand there was a copyright issue so the change had to be made.

yea it sounds ridiculously weird. they thought "open talk" sounded too technical so they opted for bonjour, which does sound better.

I'd rather have anything but some weak name that a cartoon skunk would say. Carry on :)

Unfortunately I can't get an educational discount, although I head that Amazon is offering it for $95.

You heard right, kinda. You need to send in this rebate form:

Hmm, didn't realize until I saw the form that I have until May 31 to buy it and still get the rebate. I might wait out to see if there are any major bugs before picking it up.

I'll wait a while. Today, applying 10.3.9 totally hosed my iMac at work. Is it easy to "repair" OSX using the original CD's? I can't get to the log on screen.

Yeah, I've done that before. I just installed using the original CDs, then updated up to the previous version.

So which iMac do you have?

Just a G3 -Turquoise. Still runs quite smoothly. I'm trying to persuade my boss to buy a new one for Tiger. Might be buying myself a Powerbook soon as well. I've become quite fond of them.

So you can just pop the disc and it will attempt to repair like XP does ie. leave the file system intact?

Apple copied features from Longhorn. What a cheater. I know Mac is a crap but never knew Apple was this low. Anyway, this Tiger whatever crap will be just a rip off of Longhorn for temporary. Once Longhorn launches with far superior features, it will put this mac crap into a trash can.

I don't remember the specific steps but I think the simplest (though time consuming) solution is to re-install from the original (do archive install, not clean or update), then go to Apple's download page to install 10.3.8 or whatever version that worked for you.

You could also start up off the original disk and run the Disk Tools (?).
