Starts soon, what are people's opinions on possible winners, losers etc.

As always Surrey look very strong, Glamorgan were superb last year but will miss Kasp for a fair bit of the season.

The defending champions Warwickshire must have a good chance. They have seasoned campaigners in Nick Knight and Trevor Penny underpinning the batting, England fringe player Ian Bell looking to stake a claim in the squad and Heath Streak leading the attack.

Surrey do look strong too and Hampshire look to have a good lineup, but I think they'll have too many players missing on international duty to sustain their challenge.

Surrey's problem is always the fact that internationals are away. If they weren't they would be odds on favourites every season.

I still think they have a good chance, and as you say Warwickshire will be tough to beat.

Lancashire are another team who are normally there or thereabouts and also suffer from international absences.

So it's the first day of the cricket season and surprise, surprise, it's chucking down with rain. Lovely!

You can keep an eye on how things are going here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/latest_scorecard/default.stm

Warwickshire and Durham weighed in with huge batting performances in their first innings, so look set for victory. With the weather being a bit rainy (as it will be in England in April!) expect a few draws.

It depends what you want.

Middlesex are a good team and play at Lords. But other than Strauss,Ed Smith and Owais Shah they are lacking in top talent.

BTW I'm referring to the one day comps here as Lancashire are in the second division.

Glamorgan are often to a terrible start, three straight losses and a real uphill task against Surrey now.

This might end up being a tough first class season for the Glam.

Since I'm from Middlesex County (NJ) I've decided to support them. So of course they're terrible so far.

That's funny. I didn't realize they had English county names in New Jersey. I thought most of them were Native American names. Piscataway is a native name, no?

I know that in Massachusetts, almost all county names (except Nantucket) are identical to county names from England.

OK, here is a map of all county names in New Jersey:

http://county-map.digital-topo-maps.com/new-jersey-county-map.gif

and a map of all county names in Massachusetts:

Sorry, this is very much off-topic. But I couldn't resist doing this research after above comment.

Some of them are: Middlesex, Sussex, Gloucester, Essex, etc. Others like Cape May I presume aren't.

Piscataway is indeed a Native American derived name.

Speaking of researching, I discovered today that Middlesex County in England is at least partly London. Been trying to decide on a English soccer team to follow, so I'll pick one from there.

they admitted to tampering with the ball, not naming which player(s) though, from may 9th's game vs nottinghamshire.

Hampshire's lead reduced to 5pts- Warne bowled 6-88 in a losing effort as Streak bowled 6-31 for the winning team (warwickshire).

Glamorgan is at 248-1 at the close of play on Day 1. not a good start for Middlesex

Especially since Glamorgan is 0-1-6 (that would be 1 draw and 6 losses) so far this season.

yeah, and the match started late, if it had gone like this and started on time Glamorgan would probably have like 500 runs and just declare
