The guy is so in love with his own voice and every opportunity he gets to pronounce a spanish name (or nickname), he goes so over the top with it, it's almost insulting (to the player and to himself).

I don't mind half of what he says, but the WAY that he says it makes me want to rip off my own balls and shove them in my ears.

Anyone else with similar thoughts?

Long live Max Bretos... I actually enjoyed the taped version of LA-RSL....

I happen to enjoy Max as well. He's knowledgable and brings enthusiasm to the game, makes you feel like something important is happening. I can see why some may not like him though, I'd say he's what Dick Vitale is to college basketball.

I was shocked to learn that anybody has a distaste for Max. Max for governor of CA!

Max is a disgrace to what is otherwise a perfectly good channel.

Yeah, he can be inane and annoying. But aren't all commentators? You try to fill in 120 minutes worth of air time with scintillating comments and razor-sharp insight.

On the plus side, I think most of his *ahem* Latin cultural references are meant tounge in cheek. He is a native speaker (I think he's Cuban or Cuban American but I could be way off base). He is wildly knowledgeable and can make a really dreary match seem entertaining. I remember a UEFA Cup game three years or so ago... Leeds vs. Maritimo I think it was. God, the most boring 90 minutes of my life. But somehow he had all this info about the Maritimo coach and his house by the sea... Just kept riffing on little things, quite funny. Stopped me from turning the game off, I'll tell you that which is the mark of a quality commentator.

I enjoy what the cool cat Max brings. His knowledge and appreciation for the game surpasses that of everyone on that channel, except maybe Webster and McMahon. His pronunciations are a bit exaggerated, but that's no big deal. I'm used to listening to Spanish commentary too, and those guys make the most of every chance to roll their RRRRRRRRRRRRRs and pronounce names with power so I'm used to it.

If he would calm down and call the match more than try to crack jokes and make cultural references, I think I'd be fine with him. He doesn't bother me as much as he used to, but he's still not one of my favorites.

Mainly, I think he tries too hard.

Personally, I'm not a fan. His cliches like "Early days" are plain annoying, and his goal call, "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss" is equally annoying. Watching the clip of Cobi Jones's goal from the RSL game on MLSnet.com, I got embarrassed listening to Bretos singing, "It's ooooovvvvverrr." It's just annoying and almost inapproriate for an announcer to say.
In general, I don't like announcers who use catchphrases, and Bretos uses them way too much.

I think one of the most important aspects of a PBP broadcast is energy (assuming that knowing the material, the teams, the players is a given). I think Max brings that and does a great job with it. I do agree that his habit of over-pronouncing any Spanish name or word can be a bit tiresome, but all-in-all I think he does a good job.

Bretos knows absolutely nothing about the European game, and watching him do any of those matches is painful. I turned him off for a half hour in the Serbia - Spain game recently. This after he said that Spain's best and most proven unit on the pitch was the strikers, after Raul (he of the horrific form) was brought on to be paired with Torres................some of his other comments are even worse.
And before you say "he's pretty knowledgeable", remember, this is his JOB.

IMO he's no more annoying than than well known cliche merchants like Dick
Vitale, Chris Berman or Kevin Harlan. As for the LA-RSL game , it was carried
on FSN West and Homer-ism is not unusual on regional networks in any sport.

He totally screwed up the first Serie A match of the day, TOTALLY screwed it up with his stupid, immature commentary. Come on Max, quit being such a clown and take the game more seriously. It was funny at first but it's really testing my patience now. I was thrilled about Serie A coming to FSC. This type of unprofessional commentary will slowly kill that excitement though.

Derek Rae's voice will be music to my ears on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Amen. He was unbearable on Sunday. Sure, he brings enthusiasm. But at what price? My sanity isn't worth his enthusiasm!!

I finished watching the DC-Dallas match Saturday night via streaming from MLSnet.com, as I couldn't handle the FSC broadcast with Max.

I'd much prefer just crowd noise to Max, and am wondering who's worse, Max or Jack Edwards.

Was that Max calling the Lecce v Ascoli game on Sunday? He needs to learn that if a ball hits a player in the arm it is not necessarily a handball.

Not only does he not understand the laws of the game, he also doesn't know who half the players are.

Right. I'm puzzled how so many people in this thread can say he's very knowledgeable about the sport and footy players worldwide. Its amazing to me how little he knows considering its his bloody job!
