Excuse my ignorance, but all I know about the subject is that Libertadores is the more prestigious tournament. What are the other differences? How do teams qualify for the Sudamericana as opposed to Libertadores?

Copa Sudamericana was started around 2002, so aside from being younger than Copa Libertadores, its played by teams from mid table down in their respective countries, think of it like Champion's League and UEFA cup in Europe.

copa sudamericana is a new version from "copa merco norte" and "merco sur"

Another difference can be that
Copa Libertadores is sponsored by TOYOTA
Copa Sudamericana is sponsored by NISSAN. jejejee

copa libertadores is a very old tournament - full of tradition
copa libertadores is champions and runner ups
sopa suramericana=Nissan is a summer tournament for 3rd and 4th string teams in suramerican ligas, a CONSOLATION set of games to make some TV money, when copa Libertadores is over! Good to show some players that had no chance to shine with their own clubs.

Bolivia has a different system to get in clubs in to the tournament. Boca Jrs. and River Plate have automatic to the Sudamericana. Why? Just is. Ok - for next year Boca earn the "retaining champs" spot. Brazilian teams boycotted in the first edition. They were the great spectacle during the second edition. The tournament has brought some games. The one that still gives me chills is the River Plate v. Cienciano "classic."

Sudamericana is hanging in there not like the other old forgotten Conmebol tourneys(Merconorte, Mercosur, Copa Conmebol, SuperCopa). Let's hope that the Sudamericana stays for longer. But they need to stop bringing in the big teams like Boca, River and other powerhouses. This tournament is supposed to bring in the new up and coming 4th and 5th place teams. I don't think it's fair to bring in Boca, River, Sao Paulo, Santos. And even more unfair if it's by invitation only with no need of qualifying. Then again, conmebol-con la plata baila el mono- :D

Boca and River don't need to finish on top or accumulate points during the argentine league. No matter how bad they finished in the argentina league, they are invited. They enter the sudamericana in the second phase of the argentina group. A total of 6 teams from Argentina enter the competition. 4 teams play it out to play against Boca and River in the second phase of the argentina group. con la plata baila el mono(conmebol) :D

yeah. they do. and it's unfair to the 4 teams fighting it out while Boca and River are just waiting there in the second phase to play the winners. And the other teams are usually "small" teams like banfield, arsenal, quilmes.

uefa already said that the champs league winner wasn't going to play, they will send a replacement team.

its like a copa merconorte y mercosur united! it was made mostly because we owned so bad in the merconorte (every year made we won it) then they made Sudamericana which is another attempt like Copa Conmebol.
